Gonna go ahead and do my 6 month update since nothing in likely to change in the next few days.

2. Get a RetroUSB AVS + Everdrive. I'm holding off on this until I know more about the Retroblox Polymega.
3. Get an OSSC and maybe sell my last PVM. Done and I am now PVM-less
4. Get Breath of the Wild, Cuphead, Tekken 7, MvC Infinite, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Cuphead finally has a release date! I'm waiting on Tekken 7 to come down in price and will likely do the same for MvC Infinite after it comes out. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has been pre-ordered since January.

So lesson learned this year. While I've accomplished most of my modding and tinkering projects, I had a personal list of games I wanted to beat also. I think I need to make quarterly goals in 2018. I keep thinking, I have all year... and it's almost July now. Also, that will allow me to pick what I'm more in the mood for. Who knows what genre or system I'll want to dive into in November. I think committing to one game a month is solid. That ensures I beat 12 games but gives me room to revisit my favorites and enjoy arcade type games in doses as well.

Back when this started I had wrote just 4 things to do.

1) Buy less games
2) Play more of what I have already
3) Be more conscientious about solid attempts to finish what I start
4) Downsize a bit further and try and slash the backlog one way or another.

#2 I have done. #3 I'm trying on still as well.
#1 and #4 I somewhat violated, but I'm correcting it and then some.

I had mentioned I had a Genesis rotting I had picked up a little over a year earlier. And then in February I made a post that I did find cheap Dreamcast and also shortly after a Wii. I also ended up finally picking up a NGPC again, a well priced lot, but got a few other titles too. So yeah, bad me.

I'm working to correct that though. As of now I'm Sega Genesis free, it's out. The Dreamcast finally hit the ebay/rb/AA sales setup 48 hours ago or so and things are moving thankfully. Sega free is the choice of me, too much, just too much. I'm waffling on the Wii, it may leave too, or I'll keep it around as the kid could use it too. NGPC I put a game buy stoppage on that, got a flash kit. :)

I did end up finding a PS2 slim, was going to keep it as a tester but emulators run anything perfect so that's going out before I cause a problem. I also did find a PSOne too, keeping that since emulators suck to test, but unofficially I'm keeping a tiny stock of games to play with it using the LCD add-on on my desk since emulation on it is N64 hit and miss.

That's where I am. Selling off a good 100+ games currently and back through the year so far. Sold off/selling off 3-4 consoles along with other gaming/non-gaming baggage. Despite the very small amount of Wii, NGPC and the 3 PS1 games I did accomplish buying far less games than last year so it's not a loss.

Markies wrote:The main goal I have for 2017 is to get under 100 Unfinished Games. I am currently at 101, so I don't think it will be that hard. However, the hard part will be staying under 100 from now on. It would be so easy to just buy a few more and completely ruin it.

General Goal: Get Under 100 Unfinished Games Beat on 01-19-17

And just because, let's add some specific goals for each console:

1. NES = Beat Castlevania 3 Beat on 02-13-17
2. GEN = Beat a Season as Coach in Tecmo Super Bowl
3. SNES = Beat Final Fantasy V
4. N64 = Beat Conker's Bad Fur Day Beat on 03-22-17
5. DC = Beat Skies of Arcadia
6. PS1 = Buy A New Game Bought on 03-21-17
7. PS2 = Beat Xenosaga Beat on 05-09-17
8. GCN = Beat Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
9. XBOX = Complete Crimson Skies Completed on 01-25-17
Forgot to add my Xenosaga goal as complete. I did finish that before Summer, so I was right on cue.

Genesis - I am planning on doing this in the next week or so, when I am between jobs.

Super Nintendo - I am about 85% of the way through the game. I just have one more tablet and then the final area.

DreamCast - This could be difficult. I have to finish Sonic Adventure and then start and beat Giga Wing beforehand. I am hoping to start it over the summer. Hopefully, I will beat it by the end of the year.

GameCube - It is really good, but also very long. I think I am on the 4th Dungeon, maybe about 30% of the way through the game.

I actually only had 20 some hours on WW HD I believe, compared to at least a dozen plus on TP HD.

@Tanooki, were you referring to PS2 emulation being perfect? I haven't checked in about 6 months but it wasn't near perfect last time I checked.

If you're looking to save space regarding PS2 gameplay options, I'd look into a phat console with HDD & OPL. I've really been able to trim down my PS2 collection. The compatibility is 95% or so, if not higher. That was much higher than any emulation charts I saw floating around. I might be behind the times though as emu scenes can change quickly.

I also played console shuffle this year:
Sell: Genesis, Wii, 7800, 3DS XL
Buy: oXbox, PS2 Phat (both mod projects)

I'll probably write up some stats later about my collection downsizing and jump to a mixture of mods, flashcarts, & digital where possible. My gameroom is looking a lot different these days! I was planning on starting a dedicated thread on it, but it aligns with some of my goals so this is a good spot.

MY COLLECTION DOWN SIZING PROJECT:
This does spill back into 2016 but it's been a long process. Remember, it is much harder to sell than buy... that is the truth. You'll see my shift to emulation, flash carts, system mods, and digital games off HDD/USB where possible. My goal was to de-clutter while actually gaining access to more games. I've definitely accomplished this. I've actually made more money than expected as well, while selling items at fair prices or starting at .99 auctions. No complaints there. I was not in the selling mode for money, but as soon as you start talking mortgage payment, that's a nice bonus. I do still have a modest collection as you'll see from counts below and I may sell a bit more, but the low hanging fruit is gone.

Since May 2016:

- Gone from 478 physical games to 199
58% of games sold
42% of games remaining

- Acquired 3 Flash Carts
Everdrive N8, SD2SNES, Mega EverDrive v2

- Sold 4 Consoles
3DS XL, Wii, 7800, Genesis

- Acquired 2 Consoles:
PS2 Phat, oXbox 1.3

- Softmod & HDD projects for digital game booting:
oXbox (also with MAME & retro console emulators)
PS2 (also with POPS for PS1 games)

- Acquired Windows 7 PC for emulation
Free from work
2.8 GHz CPU, 4GB RAM, DVI Radeon ATI

Other Media Gone:
Sold 106 DVDs and BRs
- Ripped all these movies via MakeMKV and now have a media HDD set up
Donated 50 VHS Tapes
Sold VCR/DVD Combo
Donated VCR
Donated (2) 24" CRTs
Sold 2 Books
Donated ~20 Books

So quite a bit moved out the house! All while gaining the ability to play more games and having a library of DRM free movies available. 8) My goal is to not go too far above 200 physical games moving forward. That is a manageable amount for me. I have my gameroom back. Lots of folks have 200 movies or CDs so the room just looks like an average media room... with an AV cabinet full of retro consoles behind glass

GOAL RECAP:
‌• Soft Mod my Wii

I actually decided to sell this. My oXbox mod took the place of this. I have some desire to play digital Wii and GCN games off SD card but it's low on the priority list. The PSP library via digital means is probably higher up for me personally. Another topic for 2018...

• Begin ripping my PS2 collection to .iso files on PC (likely using ImgBurn) for playing off PS2 HDD with OPL
‣ Transfer games I want to play first or play often over to internal PS2 HDD via WinHIIP. I have already this working for multiple game .isos downloaded. The goal here is to backup my personal collection and save wear on PS2 disc drive by playing off HDD (see link in signature).
‣ Transfer other games to external storage device (my PS2 HDD is only 250GB).
‣ Respectively trim down the PS2 collection for less collectable/generic titles I don’t mind getting rid of.
‣ I don't really expect to finish this as I own quite a bit of PS2 games, but want to make some headway.

Wow, I'm much further into this than I expected. My PS2 collection was at 114 games, I have ripped (can run off HDD via OPL) and sold 64 of them and am down to 50 physical PS2 games. Progress :D ! The only thing holding me back from ripping others (mostly for backup purposes only) is HDD space. I need to pick up another 2TB drive soon. I will likely be holding on to the vast majority of my remaining games, so no rush there. As I want to play games for PS2 or oXbox, I am moving them over individually to the HDD to save DVD/CD drive/laser wear. I would call this one... DONE!... or at the very least further in than planned for 2017. This has been a large portion of my overall downsizing project thanks to OPL!

• Install Pop Starter to play PS1 .isos files off modded PS2 via USB & HDD within Open PS2 Loader (OPL)
‣ This is actually a pretty involved homebrew app and will take some tinkering. I'd enjoy getting it working and sharing with forum members. This could really pump life back into any PS2 systems with dead lasers in the future.

DONE! Well, I set this goal before I realized that USB compatibility actually looks to be a tad higher for POPS on PS2. I do have a spare IDE and the means to place these on a dedicated PS1 HDD for my PS2 Phat. It is on my to do list but not a necessity. The HDD set up is almost an entirely different process than USB. I'll get to it, but USB meets for requirements for the goal. Bit of a goal shift after digging in. Thanks to nightrnr for making this jump along side me. That thread has a lot of views now that the primary Assembler Games thread it came to life on is down. Hope it helps some community members get PS1 .bins running on their PS2!

• Order the Atari Jaguar SD Flash Cart (link) when pre-orders open
Not up for sale yet.

• Research and follow progress on Optical Drive Emulators - ODEs (such as the Dreamcast USB GDROM) and similar solutions (such as Jaguar CD Unleashed, PSIO, Saturn V-CD slot exploit).
Ongoing process. Have been staying on top of these and learned a lot about each out there.

Specific Games:
‌• Finish Doom 3 on oXbox.
‣Halfway done now.
‌• Finish God of War on PS2.
‣Entering last temple/area.
‌• Beat Breath of Fire 2
‣ As part of November together retro
‌• Play Fantasy Zone
‣ As part of August together retro

Doom 3 is on my to beat list after Halo CE & Halo 2. GoW... yeah. Haven't gone back. Need to. Only about an hour or so left. Look forward to those together retros.

Summary: I've done really well on my projects but been all over the place with playing dedicated games and finishing them. About what I expected with a toddler and a newborn. I tinker from 9p to 11p but need to jump into more games in the remaining 5 months with these projects mostly knocked out.

Way to make us feel guilty and or depressed in this topic...

Really though, yeah I have some old DVD's and CD's I really want to get rid of.
