oh, I've had ES for years - great all around app.
But... I had no idea it could delete the preloaded uninstallable stuff with it. So are you saying that rather than legit uninstall, you use that to try to find that actual apk and just delete it? That's interesting actually. I'll look into that.

Yup, I nuked Trine2 and got a lot of space back since I wanted nothing to do with it. I wanted it off day one, couldn't as they blocked it so that's when I dug and found ES. Took me about 10min to figure all the corners of the app out, find the program and wiped it out.

Re: Favorite Android (Google Play hosted) games -- premium &
so update: I gave up w/ the Kindle. Ultimately it's a great little tablet. And very competent. BUT, the internal space is such an issue. And the version of FireOS I was running (5.3.2.1) has no root. I was at a point where I could really only keep maybe two or three games installed at a time - even moving to SD card left some part of the app on internal. But basically the OS and preinstalled crap that you can't remove took up 5GB of the 8GB internal. So oh well.
Now on the upside I was finally able to get XCOM Enemy Within running on my Shield tablet. I'd tried side-loading before w/ no luck. But this time used APK Extractor and it worked like a charm!

Re: Favorite Android (Google Play hosted) games -- premium &
Tossing around the idea of getting an Adroid tablet for gaming again. I dipped my toe in it previously & enjoyed it. I want a dedicated device vs my mobile phone. Although I love the games I've beat on it, my 3DS is collecting dust unfortunately. I've been considering selling it & going digital and Android for mobile.

I have 2 laptops (work, personal) for daily apps & my Samsung phone as well so this new tablet will be primarily for Google Play gaming. Occasionally for Web browser I'm sure.
What tablet do you guys recommend? At first glance, I think a high end tablet would be overkill. I'm not looking to play FPS or other high end graphics, etc unless you can sway me otherwise with recommendations. Back in ~2013 when I had a rooted Kindle Fire, I remember drooling over "Tegra Powered" tablets. There were higher end games released for only devices supporting it. Is that or something similar today still a thing? Will I be missing much if I go middle of the road? Do games spec out what your device needs in game details (similar to PC spec recs)?
Also, a lot of device specs seem low compared to phones. What RAM, CPU, resolution are you running? What do I need to not be anemic?
Running emulators for retro games would be a bonus. Is a root or just side loading required for this? Mostly 8-16 bit RPGs on the go here, if I need a Bluetooth controller for a game, I'd just boot up PC or oXbox emus.

I'm running the Nvidia Shield tablet, it's in the medium-hi mid tier end of things. While the stats may look middling on it, the fact it has the Tegra if a game is made with it in mind can well outperform quite a bit better stuff out there. They have their own marketplace where you can get PS3 conversions of a few games that runs very nicely (Doom 3 BFG, MGS Revengeance, HalfLife 2, Borderlands, etc.) Those that need it will require a controller so it doesn't suck to play (like DOOM does this.) If you can find an original model like I have, it comes with a handy stylus, but without, the same one with it stripped goes for just $200 new, probably less if you can find a deal online.

Okay Tanooki & Noise, you have me interested @ $199...
So are the Shield specific games like Doom 3 streaming service only (GeForce Now store) or can you DL?
Do any Google Play games support the controller? Would be cool to use the HDMI out and a controller for some of the RPGs on the TV at times.

You can buy Shield specific games. You can use a controller. Many Play Store games do. The square RPGs for instance. You can hook up to TV and put it in console mode.
