For this playthrough I was torn between the PSP version and Dawn of Souls. Went with Dawn of Souls to avoid load times.
Huh..never noticed load times unlike most games I've played....I've semi-played the psp version and got kinda confused since I attempted without a guide of any sort and got confused really quick...as soon as I find my charger I'll try again to see if I notice load times.....

It might not have any significant loadtimes. I haven't played it in some time. Whatever the case I'm sure the GBA version is more streamlined.

Well since it's not emulated on the gba I would imagine so(I know it's semi emulated on my vita with that combination download from since it is the old version on new hardware...)

You're thinking of the remake. The original NES FF's were black-based in battle (with blue-based menus outside of battle).
Thanks Popo. Man the encounter rate is up there on this one. That one I do remember clearly lol. :D

The biggest difference with the GBA version is that magic is now MP based and you can save anywhere. Imagine that! I read though that to compensate for this the enemies are somewhat harder than the original. Hmm.

By the way, yes FF6 has the best overworld theme, then 4,3,7,1. Sorry FF9.

I'm pretty sure spells and items are cheaper in Dawn of Souls.

About to enter the Terra Cavern.

HOLY CRAP

Didn't even realize it until I read this post.

Ya know, the easiness of Dawn of Souls is somehow granting me a greater appreciation for the game. Instead of worrying about my dwindling HP/MP and resources I can instead take it easy and scope out the scenery and level design. It's quite the impressive game.

I'm about to enter the fire cavern (not sure what the official name is). Also, I think I've unlocked one of the bonus dungeons but I'm not sure if I'll bother to attempt it.

The bonus dungeons are harder than the content you're currently doing, but you don't want to wait until the end of the game to do them all, as the early bonus dungeons will be too far below your level iirc. Maybe do something like when you unlock a second bonus dungeon do the first one, and so on.

After a short break (of about 4 and a half months) I returned to Final Fantasy VII today. I've been craving a Final Fantasy game, what with the HD release of X tempting me and a sudden urge to play a Four Job Fiesta run of FFV, so instead of those I decided to finish what I had already started.

Picked up at Corel Prison, beat up Dyne, won a chocobo race, got a bunch of enemy skills (Frog Song, Mighty Guard, White Wind and Aqualung - man, all the good ones are available early in this game!), visited Gongaga and got some new materia (Titan, Deathblow and Time - the first two suck, but the game gives me access to Hastega this early? Man, that's generous) and finally arrived at Cosmo Canyon.

Battling is still kinda shit. I've won everything using the attack command pretty exclusively so far.

My party is set up something like this:

Cloud - Tank - Materia: Elemental + Choco/Mog, Long Range, Cover, HP+, Restore + All
Yuffie - Support - Materia: Steal, Scan, Manipulate, Enemy Skill, Restore + All, Throw, Revive
Tifa - Attack mage - Time + All, Lightning, Fire, Ice, Poison, MP+, Enemy Skill

What does Elemental+ChocoMog do?

And yeah... the game is too easy without discovering the insane Enemy Skills. With Might Guard alone, I doubt anything outside superbosses will give you trouble.
