PlayStation Classic
Re: PlayStation Classic
Well I didn't run the list down, but it's interesting to see how close the dollar amount still added up to despite the fact technically 4 of them aren't US shop ready, but are either very cheap legit or stupid cheap making a 2nd foreign account. It's kind of sad they didn't put better titles on there, especially a few worth some serious collector coin to make the prospect of buying it more reasonable. Even if you hated most the games on the SNES Classic for instance, it wouldn't take more than a few games on that, one in some cases, to cover the cost of it. That just isn't case here, you'd have to either just not care, not be aware, or really love that entire list of games to get value from it from a value side of it. Personal interest or being easy and lazy in one thing is an obvious other reason, but the money just isn't there. Even with the issues, both Sega on their atgames checkered past and the SNK Mini with its 40 titles have plenty of variety and value behind the games more than this one does.

Don't quote me on this for 100% certainty, but I heard the PSN store on PSP has been disabled, so you'd have to download PSP games through your PS3 then move those to a PSP connected via USB. It might also be possible to use a computer instead of PS3, but I'm not sure what software you'd have to use for that transfer.

I think that has to do with licensing Gon.

Yeah, they disabled the PSP's store a few years ago, but you can still buy the games through your PS3 and transfer them via a link cable. But I too am unsure if it's possible to do that through a USB cable to your PC.

Re: PlayStation Classic
Any1 know about that bay that looks like an expansion port on back?
Interesting on PSP PSN work around.
Okay, guessing we're not the market for this. To be fair:
- 30%, 6 of 20 games not on PSN
- PSP - PSN technically dead
- PS TV - average consumer doesn't know this thing exist. Poor sales.
- PS Vita - poor sales, average consumer has forgot about this thing by now (I want one!)
-PS3 - likely traded in to buy PS4 or collecting dust
- PS4 - No PS1 Classics on PSN
- Buying physical discs- we're highly in the minority here. Most just won't go through the trouble
- Resolution/TV Ease - Most people also want a pure HDMI solution. Even on a PS2 most TVs won't accept the PS1 signal over component. Composite often looks like vasoline on a LCD.
Above doesn't represent RB forum members... but it does represent the most of the masses.
The NES & SNES Classic just hit 10 million units. I bet collectors & ongoing retro gamers were a fraction of this.

Re: PlayStation Classic
At the same time, are the games on here really things that people will shell out $100 for? I'm skeptical that the average consumer who has nastolgia for the Playstation 1 will care enough about enough of these games to drop that much cash on one of these things. Nevermind that you can actually find SNES and NES Classics on shelves now, so if the average person who just wants a quality plug-n-play based on a retro console wants one, there are two cheaper options on the market.
I do think it's a good point that a lot that CAN buy these games are outside of the PS4's ability to purchase, but I'm still not sure that this thing has enough nostalgia pull to make average consumer stomach that MSRP.

We were never the market for this or the Nintendo ones. Also, I don't think we'll find out what the "expansion port" is for until reviews come in.

Re: PlayStation Classic
Jag makes a valid point. It’s all about ease of use to the average consumer. The PlayStation Classic isn’t perfect, but it’s easy. That’s probably good enough for most consumers.
Image telling an average consumer to buy a PS3, connect it to his TV and to his broadband internet, give another stupid service his Credit Card number (or go back out to buy a PSN card), then telling that consumer to load the PSN store on his PS3, download PS Classic titles, then telling him to try transferring those titles over to another device.
Too many steps; it wouldn’t fly.
Tell the same consumer to buy a PlayStation Classic for $100, plug it into the TV and start playing. Don’t download anything, or punch in any card numbers; just play.
Easy Breezy.
You and I still wish for a better collection of games, and we will likely get our wish if the Hackchi community has anything to say about it.

Re: PlayStation Classic
@Joe, thanks. Was thinking I must've missed it somewhere. They should've labeled it "hack here."
Except we're weirdos & enjoy the project tinkering
. I really want a new Vita... but I want to permanently hack it so I'll likely end up buying an earlier model... yeah, we're not normal their consumers. I should buy a Switch instead
I do think it'll get hacked quick. That said, these games are much larger than ROMS so you'll have to pick & choose which you want on board based on storage size.

Re: PlayStation Classic
It's not just ease of use. Again, if you're starting from zero, a Playstation Classic is going to be your cheapest option. A complete, functional PS3, PSTV, or whatever else alone would likely take a chunk out of a $100 budget (or even go past it). Software, however you chose to add it, would add at least another hundred-something bucks, possibly up to a few hundred if buying discs.
I agree they could probably have stood to swap out a few of the games, but it's not really a bad deal.
Personally, much like with the Nintendo consoles, I don't see much appeal in hacking this. Once you get to loading it up with ROMs, to me, it's not much different than emulating on any other device. For $100, you can buy a refurb office PC or something that'd be far more capable.
