That's a challenge I will never opt to take, personally. You should contact Horii Yuji and tell him to get crackin' on a medal of honor for your service.

Not big on emu so I'll eventually pick up Earthbound/Mother & Sweet Home NES repro carts.

Im also a big Resident Evil fan so I need to experience its roots with Sweet Home! Perhaps that's on my Halloween list next yr!

About to go beyond the wall in Dragon's Dogma. Yes this game is that blatant with it's Song of Ice and Fire cribbing. I am now a Mystic Knight which is awesome as I can beat things to death with a mace OR set things on fire with my magic and float over chasms. Love it.

With regards to the Dragon Warrior discussion, is the Warrior 3 GBC port worth the import price I'd have to pay? Being a UK resident I don't think we got a main series game until 8. Because, fuck europe, right?

Yes. It is a masterpiece. Not only is it the best 8-bit JRPGs IMO, it is one of the best JRPGs of any generation. I love it to death.

Also...with regard to my progress in DW1...I have the steel sword, the steel armor, and the iron shield, and I am exploring the cave on the western continent. Good, simple JRPG action is really hitting the spot for me right now, and I am actually enjoying this game as much - if not more - than the PS3 and Wii games I am working through at the moment.

Dragon Warrior III is hands-down my favorite 8-bit RPG. I have tons of love for the series, although even I can't defend the second one.

(I've never actually played 1-6 on original hardware though, I've only played the GBC and DS ports... Some day I'll get around to the first one on NES.)

Dragon Quest III (SNES) is the only one I've played, but I really liked it. I need to get back to the series. I would like to be able to say that I've played them all eventually. I'll probably just start from the first game and work my way up.

The first one is pretty primitive and quite grindy, but otherwise it's a fair game (assuming you're smart enough to just blitz to the boss in the last dungeon). DQ2 is nasty as hell. There is some sadistic dungeon design and late game monsters have a habit of ganging up on your party members or using instant kill attacks that succeed quite often. And since resurrection is never easy in DQ games it makes for an intense amount of frustration. It wasn't until DQ3 that they finally seemed to get game balance figured out, and from that point on the series is very enjoyable.

I wonder how they stack against FFIII(NES)?

I can't get into the first FF and I'd rather not try to stomach the brokeness of the NES version for FFII, but yeah I enjoyed FFIII. That said it was definitely 99% dungeon crawling and had some cryptic hidden passages everywhere that I've never seen in other FF's. So worth it though, the onslaught of final dungeons towards the end probably took like 10 hours alone and I felt like I became Super Saiyan after beating it.

DWIII on Game Boy Color does the standard JRPG formula better than any other game I've played. There are better JRPGs, but they all have "extras." DWIII is cool for being so pure.

Thanks for the input, chaps. I ordered it as a xmas treat for myself. Cart only mind.

I've built up a reasonable stack of RPGs that need beating now, some big names as well like Dragon Quest VIII, Planescape: Torment, Final Fantasy XII and Arcanum. Gonna be busy next year.
