Another upvote for Shin Megami Tensei from me. While I didn't find it *quite* as enjoyable as Atlus's previous SMT titles (such as Nocturne) it certainly wasn't a disappointment. I really enjoyed it. Etrian Odyssey would be a perfectly groovy choice, too! It's hard to go wrong with an Atlus title.

Downloaded the demo.

I don't think I've played a worse demo in some time. It's awful!

Is it possible the full game is any better?

I'm a sucker for the turn-based JRPG, too. Was so excited, and now it's been heavily tempered by the demo.

Bravely Default is a throwback to 8/16-bit FF series, which can be both good and bad. I did get trash on my first play-through: set the game on normal, didn't change my job class for each characters, and went straight to battle -> loss Agnes to the snakes, and Tiz was heavy wounded...

Just like the ol'days, which means no real-time battle, no branching storyline, no other recruit-able characters...

It's all to personal taste, and so far old school RPG reviewers have been giving good review scores.

I do have a DS, I was just thinking it would be nice to get a 3DS RPG cause newer things are fun too and I like playing my 3DS XL. :) If I did go for a DS game I was thinking about Radiant Historia, one of the Dragon Quest games or maybe FF III or IV. So many choices, so little time...
DQV is one of my all time favorite games. You won't regret that one. Eventually we'll get DQVII 3DS remake stareside .... hopefully.

I suppose it depends on what you found horrible about the demo. If it was the fact that you start underleveled and the story is piss poor, then that is remedied in the full game. The demo starts you off in the second area (or so I've read) and the story is unique to the demo, just as a way to give you something to do to be able to experience boss fights, needing to upgrade your town, and class changing.

If you didn't like the class and battle system, then that doesn't bode well for the game.

What didn't you like? Not sure what you want out of a RPG demo other than to get a taste of the battle system.

This demo is a little different than most because it's basically just a bunch of basic quests for you to complete in order to earn items that will carry over into the full game.

Thanks for the responses.

I think MrPopo nailed most of it -- starting underleveled with a terrible story. Every time I walked out and encountered an enemy, I got my behind handed to me. The battle system is fine, but why are basic enemies so overpowered? After repeatedly dying with no progress, I gave up on it. I'll give it another go later today.

Pokemon X or Y. Game of the year 2013 for me.

Just gain a level or two and the enemies outside the town shouldn't be problem. Just steer clear of the areas to the south and northwest for a while. And there's basically no story at all to the demo which is good since it won't really spoil even the smallest piece of the full game for me.

Also, SMT IV is awesome. Best gameplay, music, and challenge of any game released in 2013 that I've played. SMT is also an extremely different setting and tone from most RPGs so it was really interesting in that regard too. Really excited to try out lots of other SMT games in the near future.
