I second Erik, pick up a praised handheld RPG. Sometimes the minimum hour or so needed to sit down in front of a TV, make some progress, & save... is a barrier. Most handheld RPGs have solid save/quick save systems and/or you can put it to sleep. There is also the chance this just might not be your genre.
Dragon Quest V on DS..... do it.

To weigh in on this, I didn't think RPGs were really my thing either until I played a few on handhelds.Jagosaurus wrote:I second Erik, pick up a praised handheld RPG. I only finished a handful of JRPGs, most notably Chrono Trigger and FFX. I have no problem with long games, but conventional grinding seems so tiresome to me.

Re: The Never can finish an RPG syndrome
I try to make it a point to go through 1 game at a time when possible and to finish it before moving on. But I had a long period of time where I would play games up until around the end of it and then get burned out, quit, and never return. I think that's what's lead me to be so strict with myself and RPG games now.
Ahh but Grandia 3 and Xenosaga.3.. Even though I loved those games so much I'm right before the final area in both and nearly 7 years later I still have no desire to finish them, not that I would have full recollection of what's going on by now anyway... It would need a full restart.

Re: The Never can finish an RPG syndrome
I'm gonna say bit of same as others. Never got into RPG's well, especially JRPG's (not counting MMORPG's). Mostly because they begin so damn slow and easy, every game expects you are playing a RPG for first time in your life, pretty much. Secondly because they are so long, even short break and I can't quite remember a bunch of things I should remember and it's hard to readjust to the setting and feel of the game anymore (like with books, for me).
Also made the mistake to play multiple and feel around different games, then it's sure I'm not going to get any further in any one game.
There's couple WRPG's I've played on PC, which have grabbed me good, but didn't actually fully finish even them.
UNTIL I got SMT: Strange Journey for my DS. I've been playing it frequently now and can't put it away and I took a break and was able to return without trouble. Large part of it is the fact it's a handheld game, that really makes it easy to start playing. But it also happens to be game very much to my tastes and pretty much only RPG-ish game I have around now. I think you should just think what you really like in games and go for the RPG that you really want to play and ditch the others. Whether it's the story or gameplay or whatever you like, you gotta figure it out. I believe I like ST because the story part is comfortably barren and the gameplay keeps me on toes from pretty early on in the game. I think also more important that I like to admit are the demon designs and general feel to the game, and music. The game feels just right, the platform feels just right and it's only game of it's kind I have available now. Try to get yourself into same situation.
Haven't played Nocturne but... What the heck are you doing? Are you are cheating though it? Why?
For example, I tried to play Final Fantasy X one time. The game just was not created for me. Absolutely bore of start for the game that went on and on, and the gameplay never seemed to pick-up, it's like the tutorial just kept going. I probably stopped too early, but that's what happens. I hated the Blitz ball stuff, I hated the aesthetics and boring characters and the analog control in 3D world, the overly long spell animations and general lack of interaction. It would have probably been amazing when I was 15 and playing RPG for first time, and experiencing that world and being able to just sit hours on end progressing through it. Not anymore. Never watching cut-scenes anymore, I don't even watch TV. Now I know what kind of RPG just doesn't suit me. Maybe you are trying to play games that don't work for you. I've certainly done that, but after weeding game library completely and focusing on few games I really actually want to play and couple handhelds, gaming has become fun again. It's never, ever about the quantity, but about that one good god damn game you are playing right now.

Re: The Never can finish an RPG syndrome
I have 2 rpg's i haven't finished.
Chrono Trigger- I'm right at the end but i know i have to do some level grinding before i face the last boss, and i really just don't want to. Eventually i'll get around to it though.
Resonance of Fate- Im in the 5th chapter and its just getting more and more difficult. If i'm doing the main quests and all the side missions it should not be this hard. But i guess its to be expected of a jrpg. Again i have to do some level grinding and i just really don't want to.
i'm sure ill finish Chrono Trigger at some point soon but Resonance i just don't know.

Re: The Never can finish an RPG syndrome
This thread is kinda silly. Seems like most folks who can't finish an RPG simply don't like RPGs that much. Otherwise you would play them to completion.
I mean, I "can never finish" a Call of Duty game. There's a reason for that.

In my case, I love RPGs. They've been my favorite genre since I was a kid. Though today they have to compete with rhythm games, shmups, fighters, and puzzle games for my attention.BoneSnapDeez wrote:This thread is kinda silly. It is more that I don't do well with sitting down with my home consoles for hours to play at home. Especially when I am commuting for 2 hours a day. This is where portables have helped a lot. Gives me something to do while commuting (though it occasionally makes me feel nauseous). Now instead of playing at home and getting sick of the game I am playing within 30 minutes I have a lot of fun and play for hours while commuting and even at home. I can sit or lay down more comfortably in my bed while playing a portable compared to when I am playing a home console game.
I'd have never finished Persona 4 Golden at home but I loved every minute of it on the Vita.
And the ability to just put the portable to sleep whenever I want is nice. Don't need to be at a save point. Can be mid-battle. This is where the PS4 intrigues me a bit. The ability to suspend and later resume games at any given time sounds great.

I dunno, seems more to me like people might want to see what games or play strategies worked to keep other's interest.BoneSnapDeez wrote:This thread is kinda silly. Seems like most folks who can't finish an RPG simply don't like RPGs that much. Otherwise you would play them to completion.

For me, I tend not to force myself to stick with games. Even arguably similar titles can be very different - tore through Fallout 3 and New Vegas, have never stuck with an Elder Scrolls title, for example.
Re: The Never can finish an RPG syndrome
Yea. I don't force myself to stick with games either. Got sick of Skyrim, Ni no Kuni, FFXIII-2, etc. even Ys Seven that I kind of liked. But it took me forever to get 10 hours in. I'm already 27 hours into Devil Survivor in much much less time.
