If you already have the 3DS OoT, you've got the shiniest version of that apple -- playing the N64 version won't feel very good afterwards. Now go get MM immediately, because it is the best 3D Zelda title by a MILE.someone3760 wrote:I recently bought a N64 and was wanting to get a zelda game for it. My local retro gaming store sells OoT for 17$, and they have a bunch of copies. Majora's Mask, however, is about 25$ and I would need to buy a expansion pack, which is about 20$. Im on a budget (kind of), so Ocarina of Time wouldseem like a better choice. I have the 3d version of Ocarina of Time, though. Please give me your opinion. Thanks!
Re: Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask?
I have to half agree. No reason to replay OoT on the N64 if you've played it elsewhere. But IMO OoT is better than Majora's Mask. I've been playing through Majora's Mask, and it's taken me several months now because it's just so disheartening to have the game reset itself every couple hours. Take away the groundhog day gimmick, and it's just retreading ground OoT already covered.
If you like Zelda, you should play both. Since you've already played OoT, get Majora's Mask. If you hadn't played OoT, I'd recommend that first.

Yeah. My local store has Majoras Mask marked up to $50. $25 for the game is not a bad price.o.pwuaioc wrote:Prices have been going up on MM. He might still be able to find it here for $20 shipped, but that would be a steal.8bit wrote:Ocarina of Time seems to be appropriately priced for a game store but $25 for Majoras ask is a bit much. I am sure you could score a copy here on Racketboy this year for $15-20 shipped. Also the expansion pack could be had for $5-10 instead of $20.

Re: Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask?
This is what has come to be called the Zelda cycle. Every single Zelda since Majora's Mask I remember getting a lot of intense backlash upon release, and each time as they get older a cult fanbase seems to pop up around it and it starts getting a lot of love. It's happened with both MM and WW, it's sorta starting to happen with Twilight Princess. I almost guarantee that by the time Wii U Zelda is out, TP will be considered this amazing gem, and by the time the Zelda after that comes out, everyone will be all over how amazing Skyward Sword was.BoringSupreez wrote:Get the 3DS version of OoT if you can, then get Majora's Mask for the N64. OoT is better than Majora's Mask IMO, but MM seems to become more and more loved the older it gets. Sort of like Wind Waker. I find that strange, because I can remember when the Zelda fandom considered MM to be merely a decent but strange entry, and WW was kiddy crap. I wonder how long until Twilight Princess becomes an underrated classic?

$50 is absolutely insane for that. Unless it comes with the original box and paperwork, who's gonna pay for that when they can just get it on eBay for $20 cheaper quite easily?Michi wrote:Yeah. I can't believe no one has said this yet: Get the Expansion Pak anyway!!!
The Expansion Pak is worth getting anyway. You can't play MM or Donkey Kong 64 without one. Perfect Dark is very limited without one. And there's a couple dozen games that give you added benefits when you have one. Game that support the expansion pak can have higher resolution (480 compared to 240), higher texture detail, better frame rate, and higher color depth. A lot of the games are must-play for the N64, having the Expansion Pak will give you a much better playing experience.

If you do decide to get OoT for the N64...
Anyway, that's just my two cents. Sorry for the rant.
If you have OoT for 3DS, then definitely get MM and the Expansion Pak. If you have to pick and choose, why play the same game twice? Assuming you have already played OoT on the 3DS, MM will be nice to follow up with.someone3760 wrote:I recently bought a N64 and was wanting to get a zelda game for it. Re: Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask?
It's pretty complex. Wasn't there a blue cart too? (European version?), I think some gold carts were version 1.0 and then 1.1 or something. I think mine is one of the earliest ones. I still have both it and MM CIB, it's tough to keep those Nintendo boxes alive over the years so that's special to me haha.
Anyways I look at OoT and MM the same way I do Metroid Prime and Prime 2. The first games take many ideas from previous games in the franchises (Link to the Past / Super Metroid), and PERFECTLY!!! bringing it into 3D, then the sequels, MM and MP2 are excellent follow ups, more of the same, but with double the difficulty. I definitely favor both OoT and MP1, but I loved the difficulty spike in MM and MP2 (and dislike how MP3 is insanely easy). MM definitely feels and plays like a direct sequel to OoT, which is a little uncommon for Zelda (outside of the Oracle games I guess), so that's cool in a weird way.
Um, so yeah get both. Just start with OoT and get MM when you can. Both are incredible.
