Nothing with the word "Zelda" in it will ever become underrated. Maybe the handheld and CDi games perhaps.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Fixed that for you.

If you already have the 3DS OoT, you've got the shiniest version of that apple -- playing the N64 version won't feel very good afterwards. Now go get MM immediately, because it is the best 3D Zelda title by a MILE.

I have to half agree. No reason to replay OoT on the N64 if you've played it elsewhere. But IMO OoT is better than Majora's Mask. I've been playing through Majora's Mask, and it's taken me several months now because it's just so disheartening to have the game reset itself every couple hours. Take away the groundhog day gimmick, and it's just retreading ground OoT already covered.

If you like Zelda, you should play both. Since you've already played OoT, get Majora's Mask. If you hadn't played OoT, I'd recommend that first.

Prices have been going up on MM. He might still be able to find it here for $20 shipped, but that would be a steal.
Yeah. My local store has Majoras Mask marked up to $50. $25 for the game is not a bad price.

OoT is better than Majora's Mask IMO, but MM seems to become more and more loved the older it gets. Sort of like Wind Waker. I find that strange, because I can remember when the Zelda fandom considered MM to be merely a decent but strange entry, and WW was kiddy crap. I wonder how long until Twilight Princess becomes an underrated classic?
This is what has come to be called the Zelda cycle. Every single Zelda since Majora's Mask I remember getting a lot of intense backlash upon release, and each time as they get older a cult fanbase seems to pop up around it and it starts getting a lot of love. It's happened with both MM and WW, it's sorta starting to happen with Twilight Princess. I almost guarantee that by the time Wii U Zelda is out, TP will be considered this amazing gem, and by the time the Zelda after that comes out, everyone will be all over how amazing Skyward Sword was.

$50 is absolutely insane for that. Unless it comes with the original box and paperwork, who's gonna pay for that when they can just get it on eBay for $20 cheaper quite easily?

I can't believe no one has said this yet: Get the Expansion Pak anyway!!!

If you have OoT for 3DS, then definitely get MM and the Expansion Pak. If you have to pick and choose, why play the same game twice? Assuming you have already played OoT on the 3DS, MM will be nice to follow up with.

The Expansion Pak is worth getting anyway. You can't play MM or Donkey Kong 64 without one. Perfect Dark is very limited without one. And there's a couple dozen games that give you added benefits when you have one. Game that support the expansion pak can have higher resolution (480 compared to 240), higher texture detail, better frame rate, and higher color depth. A lot of the games are must-play for the N64, having the Expansion Pak will give you a much better playing experience.

Check out the Wiki article for more info and a list of games that use it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_ ... ansion_Pak

If you do decide to get OoT for the N64...
I highly recommend getting a gold cart and not a grey cart. The original version of the game is on the gold cart (though I've read that some late gold carts have the first revision). The original version has been censored some on the grey cart, and a little more in later releases such as GCN. The gold cart version has blood. There's one dungeon that has some sort of torture room that was heavily changed. There's one boss that you beat and he spews blood every where, the blood was change to green in later versions so the joke is that he's sneezing a whole lot of snot out LOL. The Fire Temple had this real creepy chanting in the background that was taken out and replaced with music recycled from another dungeon. There's also the symbols that they replaced, like on the mirror shield. There might have been some minor changes, but those are the top ones that every one likes to complain about.

What's the big deal, right? I was actually playing the game for the first time on a grey cart. I was a few hours into the game when I read about these changes. I quickly bought a gold cart and used a GameShark to swap my save file so I could continue playing on the gold cart. These minor changes don't make the censored versions unplayable, but the uncensored version is more enjoyable IMO. Atmosphere, such as chanting in an already creepy environment, is just as important to gamplay as anything else. I prefered to play the game in its original version, the way the authors intended before the chanting was said to offend some people. And changing blood from red to green is just lame.
Anyway, that's just my two cents. Sorry for the rant.

I guess since you spoilered i'll do so too:
Actually, I think the first revision didn't do anything except fix some bugs. I remember playing quite a few grey cart versions that had blood, for example. It's possible that the fire temple chant was changed in the first revision, I honestly don't remember. The fire temple music in the censored versions is not replaced by another dungeon's music, it's the same track, except the arabic chanting is replaced by 'ooh ahh' chantings like the ones in the shadow temple.

I do know that those were the only changes for the cart versions though. The gamecube re-release replaced the spirit medallion and mirror shield symbol, and the 3DS version gets rid of the blood on the torture room floor in the shadow temple (it seriously took them THAT long!)

It's pretty complex. Wasn't there a blue cart too? (European version?), I think some gold carts were version 1.0 and then 1.1 or something. I think mine is one of the earliest ones. I still have both it and MM CIB, it's tough to keep those Nintendo boxes alive over the years so that's special to me haha.

Anyways I look at OoT and MM the same way I do Metroid Prime and Prime 2. The first games take many ideas from previous games in the franchises (Link to the Past / Super Metroid), and PERFECTLY!!! bringing it into 3D, then the sequels, MM and MP2 are excellent follow ups, more of the same, but with double the difficulty. I definitely favor both OoT and MP1, but I loved the difficulty spike in MM and MP2 (and dislike how MP3 is insanely easy). MM definitely feels and plays like a direct sequel to OoT, which is a little uncommon for Zelda (outside of the Oracle games I guess), so that's cool in a weird way.

Um, so yeah get both. Just start with OoT and get MM when you can. Both are incredible.
