I'm psyched for Mario Maker, but probably won't get to play it for a month or two... in an effort to make my house more neutral and uncluttered, I've packed up all of my video games while I'm listing it.
But hey, that just means MORE awesome levels will be available once I actually get my hands on it.

Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed

Has anyone here tried installing a Nintendo eshop game on an external drive for Wii U? I'm psyched for Fatal Frame V, but I only have an 8GB Wii U. I'm seeing mixed information online as to how well it works. I would be using an external usb drive with it's own power adapter. I mean, if that's the case....would it be worth it to just use a big cheap thumb drive to run the game as I care a lot less about that than an external hdd?
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
So one thing that I'm really gonna hate about Mario Maker is the Amiibo thing... It's gonna make me wanna buy multiple Amiibos.
Apparently the U's USB ports don't put out enough juice, so if you wanna use a self-powered USB drive, you have to use two USB ports with a Y adapter. For example, questions and reviews state that this drive works great with the U, so long as you have a Y cable.
If you're using a HDD that has it's own power plug, then you don't have to worry about Y cables. You just have to be bothered with turning the drive on and off with the console.
Nintendo officially does NOT recommend using a USB stick / thumb drive. They cite reliability.Czernobog wrote:Has anyone here tried installing a Nintendo eshop game on an external drive for Wii U? Ah, thanks! If that's the case, I'll probably just pick up a Y adapter since there so cheap and I have more than ample space on a few self-powered thumb drives. If there's any issue I'll still be able to use my current powered external it seems. Fatal Frame shall be localization supported and enthusiastically played!
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
You shouldn't need a Y cable for a thumb drive, just self-powered HDDs (they use more power than a thumb drive).

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I am actually a lot more excited about Mario Maker now than I was when it was announced. It comes out a day before my birthday so maybe I can coerce my wife to get it for me. We shall see! I am not one to make punishing levels. Instead I am all about a fair and balanced level creation. I am a bit more interested in the New Super Mario style as it has more mechanics to use to make interesting gameplay. I want to push the wall slide to the limits to make some really fun, yet challenging games.

Ah, I misunderstood the earlier post. Got it! Thanks again.Ziggy587 wrote:You shouldn't need a Y cable for a thumb drive, just self-powered HDDs (they use more power than a thumb drive).

Speaking of Mario Maker and adding extra storage to the U... I wonder how much space a level in Mario Maker takes up. If it's a lot, I'm gonna have to add a HDD to my U.

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I really doubt Mario Maker levels will be extremely large. It's using like 99% existing assets in the game, so all it's really storing is configuration data. Which is just text; this takes up very little space.
The only levels that will be larger are ones where people use custom audio.
I'd honestly be surprised if any given level was larger than 5MB, max. They're probably like 500KB or something on average.
It'll definitely be smaller than something like web images, those have far more element options (colors) than there are in Mario Maker. Or even PDFs or something (which are loaded with custom images)
Plus, all these things are being stored on Nintendo servers, they wouldn't be doing that if the foot print was large. Also, we already know it has to be fairly small since you can play random community levels on the fly like a playlist.

According to the above link, it sounds like you don't need the Amiibos to unlock the costumes. It sounds like you can unlock the costumes by completed the 100 Mario Challenge, OR unlock them with Amiibos.
I hope that's the case, I didn't wanna be forced into buying a ton of Amiibos. But it looks like I'll need to get that 30th Anniversary Mario one.
