Ah, so not a platformer fan........ Retro platforming is among one of my favorite genres.

I get how Lost Levels can feel frustrating. Hell, the developers made it intentionally frustrating. That said I find it infinitely easier to play than, say, the Sonic games, Vic Tokai platformers, and most run 'n' guns and action-platformers of the era. Then again, I am a huge Mario fan. That series is the gold standard for platforming as far as I'm concerned.

I find stuff like Mega Man considerably easier. I've beaten my fair share of Mario games, but I can't say I really enjoy them. Sonic even less so.

Anyway, it seems like I can unlock world A by beating 8-4, regardless of whether I clear all levels and get 9-1. I also read somewhere that I don't have to do it in one sitting to get 9-1, I just have to beat each individual level once on the SNES cart to get there. Not that I want to do that...but we'll see. I may just try to get through 8-4 for now and then decide whether I want to continue to the next set of levels.

I think part of what makes Mario frustrating compared to Mega Man is Mario has a good deal of momentum to him. Mega Man's platforming is highly precise, so if you die it's because you screwed up, not because the engine ran you into something.

You mean inertia ran you into something. Compensating for the game's physics is where the skill part is supposed to come in.

See, I like Mario's running and momentum. Makes me feel like I have more control over him. It also feels comfortable to hold down a button throughout the entire duration of a game (or most of it, at least).

Platformers with no running (Mega Man) or running without an actual run button (Sonic) feel stiffer or looser in comparison.

I almost never walk in Mario games, honestly.

If I had my druthers about physics in those games, SMB3 would be my ideal. World feels too twitchy, and I just don't really like how the original feels. And the newer versions have a bit too much momentum.

Quick post as im on holiday and typing this on a vita. Started MGS3 today, finished the 'virtuous mission' intro. loved the fake out with the Raiden mask at the start. Kojima is a massive troll

Not entirely. Mega Man has some twitchy-ness and a little delay when you are inching and jumping. I actually find Mario platforming easier, because I find his motion more predictable and more logical? Rational? Something.

Argh, hit a small wall in 8-1 of Lost Levels. At first I was intimidated by a long jump where I have to bounce off flying Koopa Troopas, but after a few attempts I've started getting the hang of it. The problem now is the Hammer Bros I have to deal with. The timing to get underneath him without getting snagged by a piranha plant is not coming to me. I'm also not sure where the midpoint mark is in the level, or even if there is one.

Here is a map if you are curious what I am talking about:

I'm still unsure of whether I prefer Mario or Luigi.

I use Luigi for the entire game.

As for 8-1, maybe you can simply sacrifice your big Mario/fire flower and just run through that nasty part.
