Summer Games Challenge 2015

Post by Ack »

Well folks, it's April 1st. We just entered Spring a couple of weeks ago here in the northern hemisphere, and with it comes birds singing, flowers blooming, and Dsheinem practicing in the bathroom to be cantankerous over what sorts of games we're gonna attempt to play through Summer. Many of us try each year to tackle a list of 5-10 titles composed mainly of gaming "classics" that we never managed to play through in our youth.

Now the definition of what we consider "Summer" to be for this challenge is always odious. Some of us start in May, some in June, and some of us don't consider Summer over until sometime in...October? The Hell? But, being picky aside, I figured I would go ahead and create this thread a bit in advance so we can start considering what to play, and so Dave can start yelling at us early this year(it helps keep him from getting the consumption in his old age. Also the gout). So, what games are you thinking about attempting for 2015? What do you want to knock out of the way? And what do you want to suggest as a joke just to see how worked up old man Ds can get 'til he throws out his hip?

Get ready for Summer Games Challenge 2015, AKA Summer Games Challenge 6: White Heaven in Hell

Dave, go get your dentures. You're gonna need some bite to it this year.

Oh what the hell now. I don't know whether I should post or wait another month until the "real" thread is created.

This thread is Northern Hempispherist and I do not approve. I shall also lend my crankyness to Dave, who is busy chopping more wood and grumbling at winter.

I don't believe you. It hailed yesterday .__.

But on topic, assuming I can get my SuFami fixed, I'm definitely going to put Super Mario World on my list. I've never played it before but it certainly looks pretty fun. Haven't really thought much about what else to put on it though.

It's not summer yet; so, my list is only half-baked. I will go ahead and submit it for comment (and criticism), however:

Blaster Master (NES/PSP)
Earthbound (SNES/WIIU)
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (2600/7800)
Kaboom! (2600/7800)
Galactic Attack/RayForce (SATURN/XBOX)
Half-Life (PC/PS2)
R-Type Delta (PS1/PS3)
Samurai Shodown II (NEOGEO/PS2)
Shining Force II (GENESIS/PS3)
Virtua Racing (ARCADE/PS2)

The first system listed after each game is the system where the game appeared originally, and the second system listed after each game is the system on which I will likely play each game. I am also not sure how I will define "beating" Kaboom!, but I will likely go with the "Activision Badge Patch" standard since achieving the score necessary to earn the patch badge should give me sufficient experience with the game.

Other games I am considering include:
After Burner
Clash at Demonhead
The Guardian Legend
Jet Grind Radio
LandStalker
Mario Kart 64
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
Perfect Dark
Prince of Persia
RBI Baseball

If you think I should substitute any of these games for the games on my list, please let me know.

I have never beat a Sonic game. Like ... ever. <hangs head> Oh, I've played my fair share of the Genesis titles, but I've never gone the distance with any of them. Now, before my retro gaming card gets revoked, please know that I do plan to rectify that this summer. So let's start the list with at least these:

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 3

In truth my roster of Sega games beaten is pretty pitiful altogether. So let's add a couple Shinobi games to the list as well:

Shinobi
The Revenge of Shinobi
Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi (Really looking forward to finally playing all the way through this one)

@prfsnl_gmr

An Activision Badge is something unique to the compilations, right? Intellivision Lives! has something similar.

And yeah, I'd say that's a decent criteria.

EDIT:

I made my own list some time ago. Even if this thread is just a "troll version" of the real thread that appears in May I can just repost it then.
Bonk's Adventure
Castlevania
Ghosts 'n Goblins
Ikari Warriors
Mega Man
Ninja Gaiden
OutRun
R-Type
Rastan
Wonder Boy

Nope. In the old days, Activision would literally mail you a patch if you achieved certain scores in some of their games. If you had a jacket full of them, you were either the coolest or the nerdiest kid.
