But now both Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon are available via the GOG sale....

Also, the Ghost Recon plot is eerily similar to recent events.
If you play Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, it has to be the PC version developed by Grin. Any other version will not be the same insofar as difficulty and challenge.

I finished the original Rainbow Six many years ago. It was pretty original at the time with a high focus on pre-mission planning and tactical route assignment. Honestly it's more of a strategy game than an FPS, although yes it is an FPS technically. Its sequel Rogue Spear is a bit more action oriented, but is tremendously more difficult. I have not played enough of the original Ghost Recon to give an informed decision. I do know that the PC version of it is considered superior however.

If you have not played tactical FPS games, you should give the genre a try Ack. It lets you work your brain out along with your twitchy trigger finger.

GRAW. Nightmares man. So glad I'm done with it.

I'd start with the first GR just to get a feel as to how that game goes. It's much easier on the PC. Also pay attention to the stat points you get at the beginning of the game and on every mission. You always want each team to have a member with a high Leadership stat (4 pts or more is best).

After playing other console & PC versions of Rainbow Six, the first game is sloppy as heck, as far as the graphics. It really is more of a strategy game. My favorite in the series was Lockdown, because it took a more streamlined approach, all you had to do was assign weapons and it wasn't as hard as RS3, which had a very annoying stealth-style mission. Vegas was great too, but it pays to get that experience with earlier games in the series.

I've been getting my Hexen on since Doomsday Engine fixed their save bug (save files written to disk didn't have all of the flags saved so the maps would get into a broken state). Just entered the third hub (of 5).

Outlaws.

I am halfway through with it and it is getting difficult. The Fort just has alot of places the enemy is in a better tactical situation than you are. And oddly the pistol is the best sniping weapon in the game, even more so than the sniper rifle at medium range.

My next skull to collect is Medal of Honor Airborne. I am currently in progress having cleared the first two missions, and I see it's not going to be nearly as long as GRAW. So far I like the dropping in on the map to anywhere you want to go, and the XP-based upgradable weapons, but again stupid squad AI seems to be a bit of a pain, and if you're lucky you may even see constantly respawning enemies when you die and restart. The graphics look the best so far in the series, using Unreal Engine 3. There are also bonus development videos you can unlock by earning medals. Overall I am enjoying it so far.

I love that game. It is incredibly short though. Only six levels.

Don't worry about the respawning enemies. Just push through an area to complete your objectives, and they'll stop spawning in any area where you finish what you set out to do. Every level has basically the same structure: Do a handful of objectives in the area, and then a new section of the map will open up with the final objective.

I gotta say though, Airborne is one of the most fascinating and fun ideas I've ever seen in a WWII FPS. I love that game so, so much. More WWII FPS should try an "open world" approach, even if it's only faked the way Airborne does it.

You gonna go for all of the hidden parachute landings?

I've come across some of them already on the ground, and that's one part I'd like to keep re-attempting until I get it right, I finally had a good landing on the second mission.

Finished the 3rd mission. To attempt more skill drops, I loaded previously completed checkpoints. I managed to get some. My landings have been greatly improved. One of the best awards so far is the ZF4 scope with the G43 sniper rifle, it can zoom in and out for simple head shots, and the 20 round capacity with semi auto fire makes it much better than the Springfield with the 5 shot clip upgrade. I'm finding a lot to like about this so far, so much so that I might re-attempt previous missions to get the 5 star ratings and get the special medals because the development videos have been really good too. The length doesn't bother me for this reason, and being able to start where you want is also nice.

Yeah, go for it. I did, and I had a blast doing it. After a while, I was making trick landings, on narrow points where I could snipe easily or right next to cover so I was protected from the get go.

Also, just wait until Mission 6. It is by far one of the most intimidating levels I have ever seen in a WWII FPS. I'm not saying it's hard, but when you see what it is... Well, just know I didn't think it was a real thing the first time I played it. It was only later after doing some research that I found out Mission 6 is based on a real thing, and the Nazis were fucking crazy for building it.
