I used to love Ultimate Marvel circa 2000 - 2008. I especially loved any of the Ultimate books by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Milar. I started having my doubts when Jeph Loeb took over Ultimates 3. Then Jeph Loeb's Ultimatum crossover in 2009 left such a rotten taste in my mouth that I gave up Ultimate Marvel comics.DeadPark wrote:i just finished reading every comic in marvel's ultimate imprint. that started out so good and had such promise. but it crashed and burned into a giant fireball instead.
A few years later, I picked up a trade paper back of Ultimate Comics: Spider-man. Despite all the uproar and backlash against "black spider-man" I really found myself liking the character of Miles Morales. He's a kids struggling to make the right decisions when many of the adults he knows aren't. This reminded me why I like Ultimate Spider-man circa 2000 in the first place. I just check the authorship of that comic, and sure enough it was Bendis. Brian Michael Bendis knows why we love Spider-man.
What's my take-away from all this? I used to think I was a fan of Ultimate Marvel. Really, I'm a fan of Brian Michael Bendis.
