I used to love Ultimate Marvel circa 2000 - 2008. I especially loved any of the Ultimate books by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Milar. I started having my doubts when Jeph Loeb took over Ultimates 3. Then Jeph Loeb's Ultimatum crossover in 2009 left such a rotten taste in my mouth that I gave up Ultimate Marvel comics.

A few years later, I picked up a trade paper back of Ultimate Comics: Spider-man. Despite all the uproar and backlash against "black spider-man" I really found myself liking the character of Miles Morales. He's a kids struggling to make the right decisions when many of the adults he knows aren't. This reminded me why I like Ultimate Spider-man circa 2000 in the first place. I just check the authorship of that comic, and sure enough it was Bendis. Brian Michael Bendis knows why we love Spider-man.

What's my take-away from all this? I used to think I was a fan of Ultimate Marvel. Really, I'm a fan of Brian Michael Bendis.

@jm yeah just looks like the ones they have on sale from the looks of it are from the new 52 era...right now I'm looking to read all that I can leading up to it and I think perferably in release order(especially if I can get up to the 90's stuff and maybe even the killing joke since I know that's a reference in Arkham Knight). Comixology might be my best bet though on getting most of these from the looks of it(good thing it seems like the only parts they omit are parts that supposedly aren't batman/superman parts). Though I've also got a bag of comics I picked up from goodwill a few months ago I've been meaning to get at but they look like later titles in a series and I want to read the earlier issues first...

Can someone help me remember a Comic book from my childhood? I was at a summer camp up north in 1998 and one of the kids in the cabin had this Aliens Comic book, it was a very large book and was very very graphic from what I can remember. Lot's of violence and gore, was there an Aliens comic book and did it come in a very large softcover book?

Yeah, it's probably a Dark Horse title. I think they handled all of the Aliens comic books as well as the Predator ones, with the exception of the crossovers with Marvel or DC.

Ok besides Detective and Action(I'm currently reading the original ones from the 1930's on Comixology since that's undoubtedly cheaper than some of those probably cost market wise...looking at you Detective #27), what are some good comics to focus on as i move through the years of these?

(doesn't matter which publisher as long as it can be bought digitally somehow, would really love to get into marvel's stuff as well if it's got a fair amount digital too and would like to stick to superhero and comics in the vein of genres that some of these can also fit into, along with some comedy besides the archie stuff which it looks like there's a fair amount of as well digital)

Marvel Unlimited is probably the best online deal going. You pay a monthly or yearly fee and have access to everything they have up, which is a lot. The only downside is that you don't actually own anything.

As for DC Golden Age books I would look for Superman, Action Comics, Batman, Detective, Wonder Woman, All-Star Comics, All Flash Comics, GL, World's Finest, and if they have any More Fun Comics. Then Adventure Comics and maybe Boy Commandos by Simon and Kirby. After that you start getting into genre books Iike House of Secrets and the war and Sci-Fi books followed by the Silver Age heroes.

Barnes & Noble currently has a buy 2 get 1 free on DC TPB and HC books, and a lot of great stuff. There is a Golden Age Superman Omnibus Batman is coming. There are also the Chronicles TPB's and if you are ok with B&W the Showcase books are a great deal, huge chunks of issues for a low price.

Well I'd perfer to stay digital though. I don't have the space or time to track down omnibus's(would be nice if they were on comixology or something but they only have a few "collected editions" and are mostly for the newer issues in some of these series from the looks of it...though they seem somewhat cheap especially on these older titles since they seem to mostly be $0.99 and $1.99). I don't mind going to other digital providers if I have to but it seems like both marvel and dc for the most part have their services served up by comixology anyways from what I've read...(also don't use acronyms on me, seriously not used to what these might mean sadly and you're honestly just confusing me at this point )

Just finished Knightfall 1 and Battle for the Cowl.

Knightfall is OK, but the first artist kept making Bruce look sad. Sad Batman is pathetic in a bad way. I do kinda want to know more about the origins of Bane now, though. Battle for the Cowl is actually pretty good. I like the extended Bat-family, better even than Batman.

Revival and Red Hulk are up next.

Not sure what acronyms you're referring to but these are the three I used
TPB - collected edition softcover containing a run of issues, generally. Can also contain random issues containing a theme
HC - same as a TPB only in hardcover
B&W - black and white

That's what I mean, still though any physical stuff I don't have the room for. I'd love to have them since that would probably be somewhat cheaper but I don't have the space for all of what I think I'd end up getting. Plus it's 10x easier to just read digitally with the help of apps like comixology(though I'm more or less using the actual dc, and marvel apps which just log into comixology anyways using the account and still have IAPs for the issues, unlike the actual Comix app, though I've yet to really get anything through the marvel side yet since I'm not even sure where to start with their stuff). Heck though it is a interesting idea though reading like this through the ages, this Golden Era definitely knew what it was doing and did it well with these superman and batman comics I've read. Though it looks like that "More Fun" I'll have to go elsewhere for it since comix only has #73. Plus how good is the JSA stuff that I've seen some about and where exactly does that play in with somehow these comics anyways since I think it's first iteration took place in the golden age if I'm correct?
