I think I get what you're saying.

I just went and found his old quotes relating to King's Field and came across this gem:
BurningDoom wrote:But being King's Field's #1 fan
He wrote that in 2013 in the Unpopular Gaming Opinions thread. So dude claimed to be the #1 fan of the series, yet he had not beaten the original Japanese game or Pilot Style by then? Despite both of those translations being available at that point. I'm not buying his claim. If he was here I'd act like an elitist ass about that.

I do know one dude who has beaten KF I-IV, and both the Shadow Tower games. I will have those skulls, plus Eternal Ring (already have that one) and Pilot Style. I will be that guy who beat all the first person From Software RPGs. So someday I can tell my grandchildren and they won't give a single fuck.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

My pile of skulls is an enormous pile of super tiny, pretty skulls and really big, ugly as hell skulls that look comical in nature.

You know, The 7th Saga almost feels like a predecessor to King's Field. Like, if From Software had made 16-bit turn-based JRPGs that's the kind of game they would have developed. It has that similar feeling of isolation and melancholy. A shame the developer (Produce) only turned out a small handful of RPGs.

Those are magic words to me man. It will be my next 16-bit RPG for sure. (Granted, I'll play the Elnard numbers hack.)

Descent

I've only got a small addendum to the last conversation we had. I've modified my controls a bit, so space is slide up and left shift is slide down. I also cleared level 8 last night, and the game has already started to throw harder groups of enemies at me. However, I persevered and am now saved at the start of level 9. The additional controls have given me a bit more versatility, but it took a few bad runs in level 8 to get the hang of the change.

A few other things to be aware of:
  • Lives are a resource; use them. By the end of the game you will have earned at least 10 extra lives.
  • If you die during the escape the core sequence with a life remaining you automatically move on to the next mine, preventing recovery of all the shit you dropped. If you're really low on health going into the core it might be worth taking an intentional death.
  • Conversely, if you end a level at less than 100/100 shields and energy you automatically get refilled to that amount at the start of the next level. So if you can escape by the skin of your teeth you will be rewarded.
  • Have you run into the cloaked enemies yet? Cause there's a few classes of cloaked enemies.

Yeah, I've encountered a few cloaked enemies, though I think so far they have all been of the melee variety with the exception of the first boss.

If I die in a level, do I keep keycards that I have acquired and enemies that I have killed stay dead?

Yup. It's a 100% deathmatch-style respawn. Your dead avatar teleports to level start and gets full health and you drop all your shit where you died. Keycards stay on you so if you died in an inconvenient spot and don't mind not picking up what you dropped you could conceivably continue with the level in a new direction.

Descent

Damn, game, I was kidding about the real game starting at level 8. I didn't mean for you to take it seriously!

I'm now sitting in level 13, the Europa Mining Colony in orbit around Jupiter. The shareware levels are an absolute cakewalk compared to the crap the game is throwing at me now. I'm glad I made those control modifications, as they have proven absolutely essential. I rely on sliding up and down quite heavily now. Obviously my progress has slowed to a crawl, particularly as I start coming up against some amazing AI. Enemies are starting to quietly stalk me and duck behind corridors when I turn to check my 6, bait me around corners, and hide in narrow alcoves in the floor and ceiling to rush and swarm me from behind. I'm very impressed and beginning to see why some people worship this game. It's a real man's game.

I want this skull. I need it for my pile. But I'm not even halfway through yet. I'm wondering just where this is going to go beyond what I've already seen.
