Deadly Premonition. Fix up those glitches and this game would be even better

All the Ultima games that use the horrid askew isometric view.

I really wish this series had been made with a conventional isometric view. The angle the developers chose makes my brain nauseous to stare at, and is the sole reason I've never been able to get into the Ultima games using it.

All Ultima games look awful and it's not a technology thing, either.

It depends on the Ultima. Ultima IX has the generic third person view that came out of 3D games in the late '90s...though whether you want to play Ultima IX is up to you.

The earliest Ultimas were primitive enough to look like stick figures, though the limited color palette still makes them look like atrocious ass, and the sound effects will cause your ears to bleed. Thankfully Ultima had a re-release later which graphically updated the game...into prettier stick figures. Still sounds horrid, but you won't be crying tears of blood. Ultima IV and V look like the prettier stick figures as well. IV also has a port for the NES that had a complete graphical overhaul. As a result, it looks like an early JRPG.

It's when you get into VI, VII, and VIII where you really start running into trouble, as well as the numerous spin offs like Runes of Virtue II and Martian Dreams. I find them difficult to look at. It's unfortunate too, as the appearance really is proving to be a hindrance to my wanting to play more of the series.

The font is giving me a headache more than anything, although maybe that's just what's in the background in that particular screen shot messing with the reading

I'd argue that screenshot isn't actually of an isometric game, but rather a top-down game with an attempt to create depth using the wall tiles that goes horribly wrong.

Isometric view is something else indeed. Like Pillars of Eternity or Baldur's Gate (my favorites).

You're right, technically the viewpoint is not isometric indeed. I was just using that term loosely. We may actually be looking at an oblique form of parallel projection. No matter what the art style is technically called though, it still looks like shit.

No argument there. Though I do enjoy the dialog in that scene. He doesn't seem outraged that there's a pile of bodies in his parlor, just slightly annoyed.
