That game looks cool, but two things:

1) What do you actually do? I'm not saying you have to fight anything necessarily. The exploration/discovery seemed like it could be cool, but other than walking around and discovering species all I saw was dogfighting in your 'no really it's not an X-Wing'.

2) Absolutely no chance there's no load times in between those sections, at least the way it was presented. I can see you being able to explore a certain section of a planet, then hopping into a certain section of space, but they played it like it was a seamless experience throughout an entire galaxy or something. The game could be great but that looked like classic E3 bait and switch material to me.
To answer your questions,

1. There are a ton of things that you can do, but there is an actual storyline going on that is very vague and mysterious that encourages you to explore and discover it naturally on your own. You can spend your time discovering new planets, species and the like and get money for doing so, as well as mine resources and trade them throughout the galaxy as a trader. You can dogfight and take part in intergalactic battles as well. Also, you may come across the actions of other players like a crashed battleship a player took down on a planet or you may even come across real players and interact with them and play with your friends.

Everything is procedurally generated in a very unique and interesting way. I highly suggest looking up the interviews that were done on...Gamespot I think? You can see them on Youtube and it really breaks down what they do and how they do it in a cool way.

2. I think they meant no load times between going from space to planet. There is load times for jumping from one solar system to the next, but from what I have seen, there is no load times at all in the transitions, based on how they handled their procedurally generated system. It is really intereste and again, I suggest checking out those interviews.

Was it just me or did the guy presenting no man sky seem a bit nervous?

At least the crowd seemed polite.

Yeah, he is the lead developer and head of the studio making it. He really hates speaking in public and has a huge fear talking to a single person let alone a big crowd. Plus, you have that huge pressure of having one of the biggest and most promising game so far this generation and it will get to you.

I think this is worth mentioning

"Battletoads Arcade is available for the first time on a home console in Rare Replay. We took the opportunity to fight some pigs" - IGN

I feel kind of bad, because this year is really tough for games. There seems to be a crazy buttload of good stuff in the works from all fronts and it is hard to remember it all. Seriously, Shenmue 3 wiped my memory banks of everything, but I vaguely remember games like Horizon looking phenomenal and really unique and interesting. Also Battlefront 3 looked gorgeous and has some of the nicest looking environments I have ever seen.

Last Guardian is alive and that makes me almost as happy as Shenmue 3! Even games like Firewatch really intrigued me and captured my imagination. For some reason though, this flood of amazing announcements and game footage has made me draw a blank as to what I really saw in the end.

Also...SHENMUE 3!!!!!!!???!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!EXCLAMATIONPOINT!?!?!?!?!?!QUESTIONMARK!?!?!?!?!

I feel like it has from the get go. With its use of procedurally generated content that is appealing to the eye artistically as well as the massive scale and story that sits silently behind the amazing scenery, No Man's Sky is trying to really set itself apart from its competitors as an exploration game first and foremost and a space sim second.
Elite Dangerous has a galaxy of 400 billion stars, with 150,000 of those based on current astronomical data. The game tracks your ranks in exploration, trading, and fighting, and ran a contest to see who could get the max rank in each (as well as in all three). It has a huge exploration component to it. I suppose the main thing I've seen with No Man's Sky is that there's the ability to land on a planet, but I don't really see that as a huge differentiating factor.

So from the perspective of "which massive space game are you going to get into" I'm not seeing a lot to recommend it over Elite Dangerous, which I've already bought into.

The guy presenting Unravel was EXTREMELY nervous. His hands were shaking all over the place. I felt bad for him, but I imagine he was just overwhelmed.

The big thing for No Man's Sky for me is not just the atmosphere and feel of what they're showing, but the non-guided gameplay. You just do things, and I think that's fabulous. It's not like a space sim or something like that. It's a game with an unknown world that you can go and explore and do what you like. You can discover life forms and plants and junk, to me, that's amazing.

To be honest the most non-appealing aspect of No Man's Sky to me is the space travel. Flying to a planet or away is interesting, space battles are interesting. But space travel isn't. I'm glad it has hyperspeed and junk to get around that.

A large portion of gameplay is reliant on exploring a planet's surface. The story unfolds as you explore numerous planets and move your way closer to the center of the universe. You can explore the planet, manipulate its terrain, discover new creatures and hunt them.

You can spend your time as a marine biologist if you want, discovering new species of fish both docile and vicious. You can be a spelunker exploring caves and underground flora and fauna. You can soar through the skies as a pirate, or just be a dude cruising the galaxy.

To me, it offers what I want. Less space flight sim, more space explorer.
