Cybernator was hard?

Personally I absolutely love the first Wild Arms, and I appreciate that it has a radically different setting from most video games. We need more Western-themed games.
laurenhiya21 wrote: And I'm glad I finally beat that but... now the only classic game I can really play is Silent Hill (unless Wild Arms is a classic? I've seen quite a few posts about it but not sure). I'm kind of waffling over it since I do want to play it, but I get kind of nervous since I always get nervous over playing scary/creepy games... Hate how I do that ugh .___.
You can do this, champ. I believe in you. Just remember that you're hunting them, not the other way around.
Ok, ok, I'll give it a go either tonight or tomorrow, no excuses! >:l (thanks for the encouragement)

Also maybe I'll change my list a bit to add Wild Arms in then... I wasn't planning on playing any RPGs for this but if I don't have anything else to play for a month and a half then why not. I haven't played any turn-based RPGs in a while anyway ha.
Hey, no worries. I have two RPGs on my summer challenge list, one of which I have already beaten and the other of which I am about halfway through. I say go for it.

Hell, next year I might include another RPG or two. I may need the encouragement to get through Ultima II.

The very last part of Cybernator is definitely hard. But please don't play Cybernator when you could play Assault Suits Valken instead. For those who don't know, Cybernator is the USA version of Assault Suits Valken, but during localization this happened:

They removed a good 30-60% of the text, a lot of text sequences, character portraits in the dialogue, reduced one character to simple cannon fodder, deleted a whole bunch of other characters, axed a cutscene in the final level, and generally made a mess of it. -Gideon Zhi of AGTP

So play the game as it was intended: http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=asv

I'm tempted to list other quality games in this 2D mech sidescroller genre, but I'll refrain.

I enjoy huge mechs and have no balls to crush, so Gun Hazard and I should be good to go.

Thanks for your thoughts, Exhuminator! The fact that you had to restrain yourself from gushing about the game is quite the recommendation. I'll be doing more research on the series for sure.

This is a good start:

But it by no means encapsulates the genre.

Shoutout to the opening theme of Metal Masters for Game Boy.

(Not the game, though. I hear it's terrible.)

Silent Hill

Played a bit today but I only just got to the school lol. It took a while for me to figure out where to go and what to do with the dog house key (I thought it was a puzzle derp ._.). Also I guess I'm still getting used to the controls. I keep on side-stepping instead of aiming my gun ><;

1.Mega Turrican
2.Strider - Complete
3.Vectorman
4.Earthworm Jim - Complete
5.Ghouls 'N Ghosts - Complete
6.Toejam & Earl
7.Phantasy Star 4
8.Alien Soldier
9.The Revenge of Shinobi
10.Flashback: The Quest for Identity

Strider is done.

And I'm honestly not all that enthused about it.

For an arcade port, Strider isn't a hard game, though there is a noticeable difficulty spike in stage 5. In fact, its pretty easy, and getting good at it doesn't take long since the game can be completed, once you're able to do so, in about 15 minutes.

It is, however, broke as shit. Which also means it can be infuriating despite that lack of difficulty.

Most of the time everything works fine. Its not a constant glitch fest. But when it does act up, fuck you, you're gonna die, because skill is irrelevant when you fall through floors to your doom. Or when you attempt to cling to a wall that you must climb to proceed, and instead pass right through it and go flying off the screen. Or your hitbox suddenly doubles in size and a melee combat boss (a giant robo-gorilla, to be specific) that shouldn't have been able to hit you even if you were standing closer than you were suddenly knocks your ass out. Or a level fails to end after defeating its boss.

Here is the worst bit, that had me cussing like they were the only words I know. Near the end of stage 5, there is a boss rush. The last one you face before the game's final boss is stage 1's Ouroboros, a mechanical centipede type creature. It is invincible when it arrives, because you are meant to ride it to the final boss's location before you can kill it.

This ride, which mostly serves as a transition and features no attacks or obstacles to overcome, is by far the most dangerous area of the game. Because at any given moment, for no reason, you may fall right through Ouroboros to your death. It isn't supposed to work this way. He does wiggle and move about, so you must keep your footing at a couple of points, but for most of the ride his body completely covers the bottom of the screen, to prevent you from falling off (there is a story bit delivered in text here).

Holding completely still doesn't help. Walking doesn't help. When you fall, if you hold up Strider will briefly catch hold of the centipede, as he's supposed to, but he'll still fall from there and die immediately afterward even if you attempt to recover. Jumping around works...inconsistently.

No less than three times, I reached this point in the game with nearly a full set of lives and all of my continues, and ended with a game over. I only made it when I finally beat the game by hopping around like mad, and I maintain that I got lucky there because it never worked previously. I then went on to beat the final boss on my first try in about 10 seconds. :?

Aside from the obvious frustration there, this whole thing pisses me off, because its such a shame. Strider has some great levels, awesome music, tight controls, and when you've learned the game it delivers the feeling of being a badass. Its quite fun. And then it randomly falls apart. There's a great action game here, but it doesn't want to let you enjoy it.

Actually, there is a trick to avoiding falling off the Ouroboros! When he turns, some of his body parts will flip upside-down If you stand on those, you will fall through. You need to make sure you hang back a bit from his head and jump up each level to avoid the upside down segments.

It's not very clear that this is the issue, admittedly, and it still might not necessarily be deliberate on the game designers part, but it is a bit more consistent than it first appears.
