P.S. You know you can link to a specific post, right?

How does one cast such an incantation? Inquiring minds need to know.

Also, KEY!!!!!! Those maps are amazing! Far better than the garbage I create. Mine are just whacky attempts at boxes and circles, but my artistic abilities can only carry me to the point of strange squiggly lines and chicken scratch. May your maps be the first step in a journey to a world of player made maps on this forum!

Key should make hand written strategy guides.

Final Fantasy V

I played a bit more last night, but most of my efforts went into grinding jobs. I did manage to get the steamship up and running again and then sail off and get Ramuh and the Toad spell. But I'm not quite sure where to go, so I spent most of my time in the skull cave grinding for job points or in the Chimera's desert grinding and trying to learn that Blue Magic spell he casts, Aqua Slam or whatever.

Since pretty much everyone here has admitted that the story is second tier to the job system, I said to hell with it and began researching the various jobs in the game. The three best jobs to master for stats are Monk, Thief, and Summoner in both the Super Famicom and PS1 releases, while the Oracle trumps the Summoner for magic power in the GBA release. Thankfully I've had a Thief in my party for nearly the whole game so far, and I would often use at least one Monk as well. So I've changed my breakdown a bit: Bartz and Faris are now training their Monk jobs, Lenna is training Thief, and Galuf is training Summoner. Lenna has already spent a fair chunk of time as a Monk, and Galuf has spent a fair chunk as both a Monk and a Thief, so I'm doing ok. I intend to keep a Thief in my party most of the time just so I can run anyway, so eventually everyone will have a turn. But Monks will get phased out soon enough, so I'm taking care of them now. Not sure when I'll invest in Summoner with the others.

And that's just the stat side. When I start thinking about abilities, things start getting complicated.

Unless you go nuts grinding, I'd not try to max everything on all party members. You also don't absolutely need the best stats for sure. Mastering ninja may be more useful than thief for example because dual-wield is great, and the ninjas other abilities are also very useful, whilst it still gives you a good speed stat. Bard is an equally decent choice for speed, and is surprisingly quick to master.

I'd focus more on job combos that sound good and target which stats to go for around that, instead of targeting max stats and trying to fit job abilities in as an afterthought.

Yeah, but I'll probably end up mastering Thief out anyway just because I like being able to run. Up to this point, I have had a Thief in my party for...99% of the time I've been playing. I figure I'll master it not because I'm trying but because I'll just have it around that much while playing the game.

Thief comes with some nice inate abilities at least. There's a weapon that only thieves and ninjas can use in the second world that makes them decent damage dealers for a little while too. I seem to remember you can get them from the same enemies who I spoke about before as being excellent sources of AP. Maybe by stealing?

Aqua Rake is amazing and I highly recommend you learn it for your Blue Mages. There's several other Blue spells that are also great; Blue Magic is one of the game breakers in that game. The other two are Bard and Chemist.

Heh, I'm starting to think that FFV might just be too easy to break...

You have no idea. Speed runs finish at level 13ish while massively rolling over the bosses in their way.

It's fun to break it once, then try limiting yourself next time. Give the 4 job fiesta a go sometime after you've beaten the game once. It's a lot of fun.
