There's a lot more beat 'em ups on the Saturn than there are for the PSX and N64, though. Like, a lot more. Aside from Fighting Force and Panzer Bandit, I can't think of any PSX beat 'em ups, and I can't think of any N64 beat 'em ups at all aside from the aforementioned Fighting Force.

Meanwhile, the Saturn has Die Hard Arcade, D&D, Warriors of Fate, Guardian Heroes, Three Dirty Dwarves, Crows, Nekettsu Oyako, PuLiRuLa and probably a few others I'm forgetting.

So yeah, compared to other consoles, the Saturn was more than pulling it's weight. It's just that at this time, no one cared about beat 'em ups anymore. If the genre didn't lend itself to CG cut scenes, it pretty much fell out of public consciousness.

I think the fact that the Saturn got Cyberbots but not Armored Warriors is an interesting testament to the market at the time.

Pretty sure Warriors of Fate, PuLiRuLa and Nekettsu Oyaku were on the PS1 as well.

Oh yeah - I forgot about Nekettsu being on PS1. Wasn't even aware that WoF and PLRL were on PS1 though.

Wow, wasn't even aware of most of those. I remember seeing Gekido and Stuntmaster, but just forgot completely about them. I remember seeing Xeno at the local retro gaming store but assumed the worst. I didn't even think to look for Batman Forever on PSX because the arcade version was on Sega hardware.

Any of them you'd recommend? I'd actually kinda like to play some PSX beat em ups as long as they aren't utter trash. I got Fighting Force not long ago and couldn't force myself past the Subway level.

The best ones are Tenchi wo Kurau II, Panzer Bandit, Nekketsu Oyako, Jackie Chan Stuntmaster, Captain Command and Mad Stalker.

Crisis Beat is like a not as good Die Hard, a spin-off of Time Crisis. Zeiram Zone is 3D and has some intersting fighting mechanics like a Vs game. The flipping is kinda cool but pretty sparse overall. Hokuto no Ken Seiki Matsukyu Seishi Densetsu, also 3D, is kinda boring but it looks cool. It uses a lot of the facial techniques of Fear Effect but even better. Also pretty violent. If you didn't like fighting force you won't like Gekido: Urban Fighters. Gear Fighter Dendoh is pretty cool, it reminds me of Zenki on PCFX. There is a little bit of a language barrier though. Quirkiness is the only thing that makes Pu.Li.Ru.La a fun game as the combat is boring.

The rest are mediocre except The Crow: City of Angels which is awful, one of the worst PS1 games.

It is surprising that some of the super popular series in the beatemup genre from the 16 bit era didn't make the transition to 32bit. Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Final Fight, and TMNT would all could have had some cool games made with the extra horsepower of the PS1 or Sat.

Oh well, at least the genre is still alive with great beatemups like Scott Pilgrim, Castle Crashers, Double Dragon Neon, and more.

Yea. But maybe if they did make more beat em' ups for the Saturn, it would've been more popular in the US. Kids like me would've begged their parents for a Saturn. I never begged since I was happy with the Genesis till like 2000-1. And eventually just got the Dreamcast next, skipping the Saturn/N64/PS.
