I know they have a few nontraditional ones like Guardian Heroes and Dungeons and Dragons.
But why didn't they make/port the comic book/Capcom beat em' ups for the Saturn? Like Punisher, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Final Fight?
Or even another Streets of Rage. Or a port of Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder.
I loved the Genesis, but I always thought their beat em ups were kind of clunky (other than Maximum Carnage, probably because that was only 1 player). So when I bought a Saturn a couple of yeas ago, I thought were going to be similar titles but more arcade quality.

Streets of rage in 32 bit wouldve of been cool. I think one of the reasons was the genre was getting a bit stale.

Where is my Alien vs Predator and Powered Gear Saturn ports?

Re: Why didn't they make more beat em ups for Saturn?
There were a few good ones on the Saturn, but the genre was in a bit of decline. 3D gaming was taking off. In Japan, I saw almost no beat 'em ups in any of the arcades (I was there in '98-'99). There were still shooters and fighters, and still Metal Slugs aplenty, but no beat 'em ups. If they had really had enough popularity at the beginning of the Saturn's run, there still would have been some of them in arcades in '98. But nope.

It's kind of sad really. Given that it's one of my favorite genres, it's one of the reasons I'm not as high on the Saturn as other people
I mean Dungeons and Dragons and Warriors of Fate didn't even get a US release

To this fucking day, we're still waiting on some kind of port for most of Capcom and Konami's classics, but due to licensing issues and demand probably won't get them. At some point, I'm gonna just have to build a custom cab with a PC running mame inside it.

Re: Why didn't they make more beat em ups for Saturn?
Many Capcom beat em' ups were pretty much all the same. But it would've been nice to get 1-2 of those titles on the Saturn with arcade quality. Something the Genesis never provided for beat em ups.
My choices would've been the Punisher game. It's Co-Op, and comic book. And a Final Fight game.
And one Sega beat em up', Streets of Rage or something.
That would've made me happy.

Re: Why didn't they make more beat em ups for Saturn?
It's easy to say in retrospect that the Saturn should have had all these great beat'em ups that are lost to the arcade but they had to do what was more sensible from a sales perspective. It wasn't a popular genre from the perspective of executives in the mid-90's.
There's also the rumor that Dynamite Deka/Die Hard Arcade was Streets of Rage 4 early in its development.
It sort of almost happened. One was deep in development before being cancelled and later became Fighting Force on the PS1 and N64.bacardipr05 wrote:Streets of rage in 32 bit wouldve of been cool. I think one of the reasons was the genre was getting a bit stale.

This period roughly coincided with the rise in popularity of fighting games ( Street Fighter Mk, KOF) games which replaced/overtook? the beat em up genre.

Re: Why didn't they make more beat em ups for Saturn?
The Saturn was built to be the best 2D gaming machine around, which is pretty much is... but the PSX and N64 were pushing for 3D and the medium followed, which probably doomed Sega here. There's still tons of great arcade ports and gems all over the Saturn, but it's almost kind of a shame 2D wasn't still more prominent in the 32 bit era, stuff like Symphony of the Night or Megaman X4-X6 being the norm, that would have been amazing.
Streets of Rage 4 needed to happen.
