Last night I watched Mad Max: The Road Warrior which I hadn't seen in a looong time. Great film, horrible grungy Ozploitation but shot like A New Hope. Course I can't watch it without thinking of someone queefing into a microphone these days but whatever. Max himself is more of an avatar of destruction than a character. He doesn't even seem to give much of a shit when diesel punks kill his dog, Dog. He's an old fashioned action hero I guess, he gets knocked about and bloodied but he seems just as, if not more so, indestructible than more modern, slicker heroes. No love interests, no rousing speeches, just action and glorious violence. Also the most gorgeous woman in all the wasteland. Dem eyebrows.

Followed that up with The Warriors which I had never seen. Also a great film, drenched in style. It's a very simple story told with cartoon characters but it's just so punchy and cool it's absorbing. I can dig it.

So last night's 'sploitation binge was in service of today's movie, Mad Max: Fury Road. It's been getting some rave reviews and I can see why. My head is still ringing from the madness. The studio gave George Miller a huge stack of cash and he blows through deliriously. It's not like a kid who got hold of his dad's gun, it's like a kid broke into a fireworks factory and he has a book of matches and a litre of gasoline.

There's this gonzo feminist subtext (or there isn't?), there's men screaming about Valhalla as they race into a nuclear hurricane, there's a guy with a flamethrowing guitar, the film is nuts. In fact I think it's so nuts I think it'll turn some people off. It's a very kinetic film, but not in a punching hordes of robots way, but more constant movement, churning sand, horsepower, reckless disregard for a stuntman's safety kind of way. It's great. Please if you're at all interested, do see it in the cinema don't wait for the Blu-Ray. It needs that broader canvas.

Good movie based on a simple enough premise (though thankfully it doesn't get into technicalities, and as usual some suspension of belief is required for enjoyment). Take it as you will, but is it partially influenced by the Adam & Eve parable? If it had been a man AI, how would he have schemed against his creator?

Here's one I wasn't too sure about until the ending, at which point I realized this was a genius film that was simply ahead of its time. It reminded me a bit of Natural Born Killers although The King Of Comedy isn't anywhere near as violent. The character De Niro plays is quite a departure from his usual aggressive ruffians, and he pulled it off well. I wouldn't call this a perfect film, but it damn sure was an insightful one. The core concept of celebrity worship at the cost of all else still rings true today. And the ways in which one can exploit that aspect for personal and financial gain haven't faded at all in the 32 years since this film's release.

Great movie! I though Jean Reno handled the part very well, bold the movie took on that relationship role. I took it as an adopted father role dealing with a young girl coming to age. From the assassins point of view taught the girl what he knew, how to get revenge on her parent's killers. Gary Oldman also a great part a true psychopath. Movie kept me hooked thru out, own the two disc Superbit International 133 minute run time version. I think only the first release (1997 pressing) is the cut U.S. version. Nice thing about Superbit is the sharp anamorphic imagery, all the extras are moved to a second disc.

Agree, a different surprised role on Robert De Niro. In the beginning of the movie; does it have the scene where Jerry Lewis keeps ngetting trapt in the red chair? A funny silly scene, been trying to remember what film it was in.
