So last night's 'sploitation binge was in service of today's movie, Mad Max: Fury Road. It's been getting some rave reviews and I can see why. My head is still ringing from the madness. The studio gave George Miller a huge stack of cash and he blows through deliriously. It's not like a kid who got hold of his dad's gun, it's like a kid broke into a fireworks factory and he has a book of matches and a litre of gasoline.
There's this gonzo feminist subtext (or there isn't?), there's men screaming about Valhalla as they race into a nuclear hurricane, there's a guy with a flamethrowing guitar, the film is nuts. In fact I think it's so nuts I think it'll turn some people off. It's a very kinetic film, but not in a punching hordes of robots way, but more constant movement, churning sand, horsepower, reckless disregard for a stuntman's safety kind of way. It's great. Please if you're at all interested, do see it in the cinema don't wait for the Blu-Ray. It needs that broader canvas.
