Re: Summer Games Challenge 2015
1. Final Fantasy V
2. System Shock 2
3. Descent
4. Ultima
5. Loom
6. 7th Guest
7. Mortal Kombat 2
8. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
9. Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels
10. Castlevania: Dracula X
Done, son. I have shown Mondain what the color of his insides are. It was a brilliant battle, of intense savagery and brutal dance moves. That's right, we had a dance off. And I won. Skills.
I will post more about it in the Games Beaten 2015 thread. But for now, suffice to say that Mondain's blood flows on the dance floor, and I am the new king of funk.
On to Loom, where I will weave tapestries by tooting my stick.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2015
Less than 10, but it was spread out over several days. The longest part was grinding in a dungeon for money to buy stuff so I could go stat padding my way up to 99 in 5/6 attributes. I beat all four of the monster quests in a couple of hours and then became a Space Ace, rescued a couple of princesses, and beat Mondain in about another hour, so...maybe 7 or 8 total?noiseredux wrote:woah you beat Ultima quickly. How many hrs would you say it took?

Yeah the original Ultima doesn't take that long to beat if you spend some time in the dungeons grinding enemies. I felt the same way with games like The Elder Scrolls: Arena, where I spent a good portion of the game initially sleeping outside the city gates so that I would be attacked by a bevy of enemies to get XP. Game is still fun and interesting, especially considering when it was made though.Ack wrote:Less than 10, but it was spread out over several days. Remember, Ultima came out in '81. The fact that it has as much content as it did is amazing.

Oh absolutely! I can still find fun in the game itself, even if it is a bit dated. Consider Ultima vs. anything the Atari 2600 had to offer. Absolutely amazing in comparison! When people go, "Still not as good as Ultima VII," it doesn't matter! If a game is fun and interesting even just as a historical standpoint, it is worth playing still, even if there are better and more refined games that come out decades later!MrPopo wrote:Remember, Ultima came out in '81. Congratulations, Ack! Count me among those who are impressed by your speediness.
And wow -- I hadn't realized (or I'd forgotten) Garriott and a friend had programmed the game as freshmen in college in less than a year. I did know that the first Ultima was programmed in Applesoft BASIC, though, and that Garriott learned Assembly at some point to have greater control over his later games. Mad impressive.
I started Phantasy Star III last night. Still getting a feel for things. My first impression is to be surprised by how simplistic it seems, but it says in the manual that you will play through three generations' worth of characters, which sounds fantastic. The story complexities that could arise from this really intrigue me.

Yeah, a lot of people really poo-poo on Phantasy Star III and I think that rests solely on the music (which is kind of rough) and a more fantasy (as opposed to Phantasy) feeling. The game is actually very enjoyable and there is a lot of replay value, thanks to the various generations and the choices you make create a different ending. Enjoy it, because it is actually good!Key-Glyph wrote:Congratulations, Ack! Count me among those who are impressed by your speediness.

Here's a fantastic accordion rendition of it that I am currently obsessed with. You know. Just in case anyone's interested.

Opening theme of PSIII is one of the best video game tracks ever. I adore it.
Key, have you played parts I & II?
