Two more days!

Here's the hardware I'll be playing on.

Bonk's Adventure - PC Engine.
Castlevania - Game Boy Advance.
Ghosts 'n Goblins - arcade version emulated on either Xbox or PSP. If I really enjoy it I'll try the NES port as well.
Ikari Warriors - Commodore 64 (lol), if/when that inevitably fails I'll switch to the arcade version emulated on PSP.
Mega Man - NES version emulated on Xbox.
Ninja Gaiden - NES.
OutRun - Probably Genesis? I also own it on SMS, C64, and PS2 (Sega Classics Collection remake).
R-Type - Sega Master System.
Rastan - arcade version emulated on Xbox. I also own it on SMS and C64. The C64 port is notable for being literally impossible to complete.
Wonder Boy - Sega Master System.

Thoughts?

Hrmm and you just made me remember I have the anniversary collection for megaman...might be time to do that one too on my list...I've started 4 so many times as a kid but never with intent to beat(just being a kid having fun and pissed at multiple deaths  and inevitably laughing at said deaths)

Bone, the only one on your list that I find questionable is Rastan. Everything else works for me.

Well to be honest if I do a truly serious list of classics/genre defining games I've not being a game in or at least one in the series my list should probably look more like this:

1.) Final Fantasy(I'll get a gba cart or reattempt on psp would be nice if psp had save anywhere but I don't think it does)
2.) Mega Man - Anniversary edition (at least one game off of it)
3.) Sonic - classic collection so maybe i can play on go at work(I know alienjesus said it was poorly put together but I think I'll have to grin and bear it but I don't know if what he's talking about would be evident to someone who's never played the originals) or psp(sega genesis collection)
4.) Legend of Zelda - NES ( I started this last year and possibly for last year's summer challenge but never beat it)
5. Aladdin(snes) - never played it
6.) Chrono
7.) Lunar

Honestly more acceptable of a list last time I check and honestly makes much more sense...though I honestly won't get to or even touch most of those but I sure as heck plan to try...

You sound like dish.

I played the game extensively in the arcades as a kid so maybe I'm overstating its popularity a bit.

I'd personally have a hard time describing it without using the word "classic."
"A classic Taito arcade game."
"A classic side-scrolling action game."
"An 80s arcade classic."
And so on...

It had enough of a legacy to spawn three sequels and some imitators.

In any event, I'm not sure I'll be able to finish it anyway.

This is a sold list. Here are my thoughts:

* Bonk's Adventure is best on the TG-16/PC Engine. Good choice there.

* The GBA port is, IMO, the best way for newcomers to experience Castlevania. (You can save between levels so you don't have to beat the whole thing in one sitting!)

* Ghosts 'n Goblins is a great game, but it is really, really hard. I don't think you will enjoy it enought to go for th NES version (which is actually a pretty spectacular port).

* I would start with the arcade version of Ikari Warriors. It is a good game, but all of its ports are terrible.

* Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden are both rad, and both of them are very hard. Good luck with those!

* The Genesis version of OutRun is fine. If you can find the GBA port (on Sega Arcade Classics), however, go with that. I played it last year, and it is nearly arcade perfect. (That said, the Saturn version is closest to the arcade, and 3D OutRun on the 3DS is supposed to be amazing.)

* R-Type received a great home port on the SMS. It is a fine choice, but if you can find the game for the TG-16, go with that port (...or play an emulated version of the arcade original on R-Types for the PS1).

* Rastan is a classic IMO. Go for it.

* Wonder Boy is a lot of fun, but I had Adventure Island growing up and prefer that title.
