I'll be moving May 21st, so I am going to have my time cut down a little bit in the early summer until we get unpacked. That said, I am slimming down my list to these fine titles:
1. Earthbound - SNES / Wii U
2. Legend of Zelda - NES / Wii U
3. Donkey Kong Country - SNES
4. Jet Grind Radio - Dreamcast
5. Grandia II - Dreamcast
6. Final Fantasy IX - PSX
My goal is to accomplish at least half of them this summer. Noted, three of the six are RPGs. Wish me luck!
Summer Games Challenge 2015
Re: Summer Games Challenge 2015
Not with a focus on doing so. I've only heard bits when watching videos of the game. I like what I've heard though, and if the rest is as good as Gunstar Heroes, well...Key-Glyph wrote:Hey CFFJR, have you listened to any of the soundtrack from Alien Soldier? It's crazy. And by Kazuo Hanzawa.
Really looking forward to hearing your thoughts if tackle this one!
I'm excited to finally play it though. I promise I'll post about it!

Regarding the classic debate from a couple of pages back, I have to say I really don't think E.T. is a classic in any sense.
The game is certainly infamous, but that's about it. There's nothing special about it outside of the dump story, and everything it represents (a game crippled in development and rushed to a saturated market to capitalize on a license) still exists in the modern game industry. Which is to say, nobody learned anything from it.
Not to pick on you or anything Prfsnl. I just really think there are better choices.
On that note though, you called out Mega Turrican and Dynamite Headdy as not being classics. Do you have any suggestions for possible alternates on the Genesis?

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2015
I like the idea of picking five, so here's my final list of musts for the summer:
1. Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
2. Metroid (NES)
3. Super Mario Bros. (NES)
4. Phantasy Star III (GEN)
5. Earthworm Jim (GEN)
Some of your guys's picks have influenced my choices!
I really, really want to play MOTHER, but I'd have to emulate it, and I'm not really fond of playing games at my computer if I can avoid it. I'll have to tackle that one some other time.
I'll also be unofficially dabbling in Super Mario World, because several beloved people in my life are harping on it.

E.T. has huge historical impact & notoriety. It's also an early example of a console "adventure" game that has something of a conclusion. I'll allow it.
Join the Retron 5 cult. That will allow you to play a legit Mother cart in English.Key-Glyph wrote: I really, really want to play MOTHER, but I'd have to emulate it, and I'm not really fond of playing games at my computer if I can avoid it. I'll have to tackle that one some other time.
Re: Summer Games Challenge 2015
E.T. is often considered the death knell of the video game industry in the early 1980s and heralded the video game crash of 1983. It's not classic in that it is good or even necessarily influential in game design, but it is historically significant because it's the linchpin that brought the end of American dominance in the console market and ruined Atari.BoneSnapDeez wrote:E.T. has huge historical impact & notoriety. No worries. I think that the "Is it a classic?" debate make this thread a lot more fun.
Here is an article on E.T. when it appeared on 1up.com's list of 50 "essential" games. I follow the articles's (and Bone's and Ack's) reasoning for including it on my list. A recent documentary also features the game prominently, and I feel like the game is something of a landmark in video game history. (I was also surprised to see how often it was mentioned on the "first game you remember playing" and "first game you remember hating" threads.) I feel like I am missing out by having never played through it.
There are many classic Genesis games, and I would consider any of the following for your list:CFFJR wrote:On that note though, you called out Mega Turrican and Dynamite Headdy as not being classics. Do you have any suggestions for possible alternates on the Genesis?

At this point, I think playing Ballz should be a requirement before you can join this website.

I'm glad you caught that. It is definitely a "forum classic" at this point.Ack wrote:At this point, I think playing Ballz should be a requirement before you can join this website.

That Genesis list, by the way, has some questionable choices, at least if we're saying that some are more deserving than Dynamite Headdy.
