Summer Games Challenge 2015

I go for games at least 2 generations back which were influential or especially critically acclaimed in their genre on on their console, or which were a defining part of a specific developers work.

This but with 3 gens...I think I'm going to sift through my library and give the process some more thought(only problem is a good chunk of these are on my top two shelves and really high so yeah... o_O)

You guys realize Dsh isn't a mod anymore; if you guys want to call something a classic he doesn't have the power to overrule that.

Funny thing is he was a former mod during last years challenge too so...

I don't like the inclusion of 6th gen games, personally. They don't end up on my list. Even some 5th genners are questionable.

A "classic" to me is defined not only by critical acclaim, recognizability, and popularity, but also by age and historical impact. In another words, enough time needs to have passed to see how the game has come to influence future generations.

I also believe a "classic" game should adhere to what I'd call "classic game design" and aesthetics. When I look at 6th gen titles I see games that are pressed onto DVD-ROMs, feature 3D graphics, voice acting, and dual analog controls. These are staples of "modern" gaming, not classic.

This is all just my opinion of course. I don't have anything (originally) released after 1990 on my list. I also think that a forum full of retro gaming aficionados, such as this one, shouldn't have to resort to 6th/7th gen games anyway. There's a glut of 3rd & 4th gen stuff out there. Or, ya know, some of yous could break out of your comfort zone and try something from the..... second gen. *dun dun dun*

Conversely you could break out of yours and play something like Half-Life

Haha, no worries. I'm doing Ultima partly as a tribute to you, and partly because the only Ultima game I've ever gotten through is named Akalabeth... It's time I remedy that.

I honestly can't do classic RPGs as I've run out. I've played all the big names. I guess maybe I could do one of the old Epyx WRPGs next year.

I may mistaken, but if you purchased a new copy of the game, it came with a map and strategy guide of sorts.

I only had the cartridge as a kid, so I don't know if it came with that or not.

You know it. I don't play pretty races.

And I need to start playing through more WRPGs, especially classics. I've dabbled with many but beaten criminally few. Ultima looks like a good place to start.

What the heck, i'll go ahead and make a list that'll start after I finish ranger...(let's see if this ends up better than last years:

1.) FF1(relative to if I can track down a gba cart just because of saving and being able to play at work on my breaks. PSP is nice but I don't think it has the "save anywhere" which is a life saver for my playthroughs since I tend to die every now and then)
2.) Faxanadu(nes) - keep hearing about it and have never actually sat down and played my copy yet...
3.) Sonic Classic Collection(DS) - The key is to play through and beat at least one or two games off of it. I've sat down to play them in various times on gba if I recall correctly but I've never beaten a sonic game
4.) Either Ratchet and Clank, Sly, Spyro or Jak and Daxter(I want to actually beat a game in one of these types of series that's not mario...)
5.) Chrono (sfc w/translation patch) - I need to actually beat this game, I've started several times but got distracted by different games and such

Maybe instead this:

1.) ff1 (gba cart hopefully)
2.) Lunar(didn't complete it during or even remotely after TR so this one might be first priority, and on ps1)
3.) Sonic Classic Collection(for the way I am I'll not have it bug me that it's shoddly done)
4.) Ratchet 1(I'd rather put spyro but I only own 2 and 3 of the original series thanks flea market though maybe I could...I think i loaded it up on my vita during that glitch in the system that allowed it a few months back...)
5.) Chrono(which means I'll be confined to playing this at home since it's a import w/translation patch)
