New Catridge Based Console - Retro VGS

Post by Jagosaurus »

What's your thoughts on this? Mike Kennedy of Game Gavel is using Jaguar system molds as a housing for an entirely new console that takes carts & USB controllers.

I personally think the project is aimed at too small of a niche when indie devs can reach the masses via PC, eShop, PSN, XBLA, etc

What it does have going for it... I love the Jaguar system design.

For those who don't know, the left over Jag system cases orginally were sold to a medical equipment company & used in dental machines lol. Jag lives on again.

Project will be on kickstarter. Yay...

Frankly? It's silly.

The best example of a "new" "console" working out via Kickstarter has been the GCW-Zero...and only because like others that have tried to emulate it since, it was designed to PLAY all those old games that we fawn over. Some games have been created for it, but nothing of importance that would make you hit the market for one. It's a cool toy, but there's never going to be enough people owning one to see properly licensed third-party game development on it. (I own one, against my better judgement, it's one of the only things I've ever actually backed on Kickstarter.)

Speaking of Kickstarter...so the magazine (yeah, it's the same people as Retro) has seen a little bit of success in what amounts to a rapidly dying portion of the print industry. Obviously they're buoyed by being successful at it twice...a Kickstarter success story. A game system is an entirely different beast though. It's going to suck every last bit of cash any of the people involved have ever had, and leave them dry on the side of the road gasping for a drink of water, a sip even. What do they expect? To attract third-parties into producing exclusive content? Where does the cash reservoir that they'll need to dip pretty deep into come from? What do they want, sequels to games from teams that are long since disbanded, familiar with hardware long since cast aside? To quote from the Dark Tower series (which I can't believe is making the rounds in film/tv news again...please before I die, please before I die, please before I die): "The world has moved on."

Games like Shovel Knight don't find success on a single platform. It's available on 3DS, Wii U, PC [Windows/Mac/Linux] and in 10 days, PS3, PS4 and Vita. Why? Because the only way to sustain and develop some sort of profit in the current market with the scope of platform competition being what it is, is to fling it "multi-platform". How many platforms is Retro City Rampage on now? People create games like this -to make money-, and that's simply never going to happen on this Retro VGS. I'd like to see them try and pitch this to Kevin O'Leary. He'd say: "Money may go to bad people, but it never goes to bad ideas.", or "Money goes only where it knows it’ll be safe, and that’s generally in the vicinity of more money.", or "As money’s biggest fan, I have learned a lot from watching how it behaves, where it goes, what it runs screaming from."

They should stop now, before it sinks their whole ship.

Do I win an award for being the only person to post in the correct subforum?
