I swear I see the same bums on the same stoops every visit.
Go to St. Louis (both east and west these days) and you'll get the same welcome. Ah, American inner cities are something special. I don't know why anyone who could afford it would choose not to live in the suburbs.

The thing is, I don't mind being called a bitch ass nigger. It's almost endearing.

Yeah, with one of my friends, it's basically how he says hello.

I live in a more suburban area of Atlanta now(still within the Perimeter), but I lived inner city for three years. The crime sucked, but so much stuff was close by that it was really nice. And I love being in a city surrounded by skyscrapers. It's like a massive edifice to the power of human ingenuity. I get a kick out of the skyline every time I drive to work and cut through Midtown, or look over and see Downtown or Buckhead.

I'm always super paranoid about crime when I go to a big city. I always feel like I'm seconds away from getting mugged. So many people, so close together... It's claustrophobic ;_;

What's the best way to, uh, avoid crime/danger in a big city?

EDIT: I ask because I may be moving to one in a few months

What city? Some behavior differs in different regions of the country.

The easy stuff is: don't flash cash, don't make eye contact or keep it limited to a head nod, avoid dark alleys and stick to well lit areas at night. Don't keep valuables in your car. Try to live somewhere with a gate and a security guard or camera system. It's pretty much all common sense stuff.

Boston, most likely.

I've heard to avoid eye contact; I would've never guessed that. Do people take it as a sign of aggression or something? Anyway, yeah, it's mostly common sense, but being the bumpkin I am, I want to make sure I'm armed with as much information as possible :)

It can be, but it's more about not calling attention to yourself. Folks don't gank who they don't see. Ask noise for specific info about Boston. Usually there are places in every major city to avoid, and some to only avoid at night.

Speaking from experience, having lived in New Orleans and visited with great frequency at any time I have not resided, the best way to avoid crime is to know your city well. Know the culture, know when and where to be, and not to. Know how to carry yourself so that you don't look like an easy mark. Most of all don't commit crime, that is a surefire way to be a victim of crime.

I have had a few unpleasant experiences over the years, and I've been in neighborhoods you would be advised to avoid. The truth is I was involved in and surrounded by more violence living in WV, and even in the sticks here in FL than I ever experienced in New Orleans. Perhaps it comes down to being a "local". After many years in FL, I thankfully don't have any real crime to deal with.

I'll go even further and say that my family with a history of over 80 years in New Orleans have never been the victim of violent crime, and there are at least 100 of them who have lived their entire life there.

You hear bad things about a place, sometimes the specifics aren't clear. If you go to Mardi Gras acting drunk and stupid, walk a couple blocks in the wrong direction then things could go badly for you. It's true a little common sense goes a long way.
