Summer Games Challenge 2015

I've already been considering a list, but I'm not sure if I'll be participating this year as I expect I'll still be chugging through the Alphabet Marathon. We'll see.

If I do participate, here are games I'd likely play:

1. Shenmue (DC)
2. Fire Emblem: Ankoku ryuu to Hikari no Ken (FC)
3. Kingdom Hearts (PS2)
4. Banjo Tooie (N64)
5. Metroid Zero Mission (GBA)
6. Metal Gear Solid 3 (Vita)
7. The G.G. Shinobi (GG)
8. Super Aleste (SNES)
9. Mega Man X (Wii U VC)
10. The Curse of Monkey Island (PC)

I have other thoughts too, but they're either ones that are debatably less classic (Goemon for N64, Lolo 2 for NES, Stranded Kids for GBC, Saturn Bomberman for Saturn) or are really long RPGs - the 2 on there are already more than enough considering how many RPGs are in my alphabet marathon too.

With the exception of Mega Man X, Saturn Bomberman is more "classic" than any game on your list.

I will likely squish my summer challenge and the ongoing alpha thing together in some form or fashion, but I will wait to see where I am in the latter come warmer temperatures and more free time...

Secret of Mana will take up a big chunk of April anyhow.

Not bad, but some are a tad questionable.

Whenever I see sequels on someone's list I always think "well have they played the original?" For instance, have you played Metroid on FDS/NES or the arcade Shinobi? I think those would make better picks than the sequels you listed, in all honesty.

Yeah, same here. Although this Summer Games Challenge sounds awesome, the cold months (at least 1/2 the year in Montana) are when I actually get most of my 'long-form' gaming in for the year. So it's helpful for me at least to start thinking about shorter games to target for summer, rather than blindly attacking my backlog only to wind up in the middle of something like Skyrim with no hope of completion, what with competing demands for time.

For that matter I'm still just barely within my viable window of being able to 100% GTAIII before the weather warms up.

Honestly I figured this thread was started now either purely for the purpose of early brainstorming, or as an April Fool's thread, but either way I'm down!

Yes, I have.

Bear in mind that I also make my selections from games I actually already own. It's getting harder every year without just choosing 10 RPGs

I'd be curious to hear the argument for why you think Banjo Tooie is a classic. Not saying it isn't...but the series' appeal escapes me (as does that of the system it started on).

Rastan is a little bit of a hard sell, too.

I've always considered Rastan to be a big-name arcade game of that era. Are there any retro gamers among us who haven't at least heard of it? Seems "classic" enough to me. A notable Taito game, a notable early-ish action-platformer... Tons of ports, three sequels, and a few imitators as well. I don't think it's any more/less of a classic than Ikari Warriors, which is also on my list.

My tastes in gaming are rooted pretty firmly in the "retro" realm and I really don't consider anything past the 16-bit era when I create my lists for these challenges. (Okay, I did play SotN last year - but that only after a Fantasy Zone ragequit). This year I tried to keep it all pre-1990. No RPGs this time around, I think I've hit all the notable 8/16-bit ones at this point...

The number one game I plan to play this year is Front Mission 5. I'm hesitant only because it's the last game in the series, and supposedly the very best. Right now it's something I can always look forward to, a beautiful concept. But once I play it, even if it is amazing... that's it. I've played the very best of Front Mission and there likely will never be another proper game in the series. So I keep putting it off due to romanticism.

But I could die from an aneurysm, or car wreck, or rogue meteorite any day of the week. So I guess I'd better get to playing it sooner rather than later.
