How do you personally make time for gaming?

Post by Exhuminator »

Something I've noticed around here is a lot of us are fairly older adults. (I'm sure that's partially a side effect of this forum being mostly centered around retro gaming.)

First and foremost that means many of us work full time jobs for a living, which easily eats most of our daily hours away. That also means we live in our own homes, which require copious hours spent on housekeeping, chores, shopping and the like. That alone is a huge time investment. And I've also noticed many of this forum's members are married, or married with kids. Maintaining a healthy relationship and being a proper parent takes up a significant amount of time as well. Some of us actually try to have a social life, and a lot of us have other free time interests outside gaming. With all of these factors in consideration, it really goes to show how dedicated a lot of us are that even as responsible adults we still find time for our gaming endeavors.

I am hoping in this thread to discuss our own personal tricks and sacrifices we make to find time for gaming. Perhaps some of us will learn ways to squeeze in a bit more play time, or conversely realize maybe we play a little too much at the expense of more important things. However I for one am also interested in hearing how the younger members around here make time for gaming as well, be they high school or college students. Even at that age there are many distractions from gaming which have to be put aside to indulge in some pixel lovin'.

Lastly I have included an anonymous poll about how old each voting member is. I have done this because it will be an interesting counterpart to go along with this thread's concept. I am not asking anyone to outright come out and say how old they are though, unless they simply wish to (I just turned 36). I will come back later to post my own methods of being a grown up and also a gamer, but I actually have to get back to work now.

Disclaimer: I know as old as this forum itself is, this topic has likely been done before (as has probably everything else), but it's always interesting to revisit a previous discussion in order to gain new insights from existing members or fresh ideas from members who weren't around before.

I play games in the evening after work or on the weekends. A lot of my free time comes at the expense of sleep. I generally get 3-4 hrs of sleep at night on the weekdays.

I don't have a baby (yet) so I am trying to get as much in as I can. Since I am on a wait list to get into my school program, I work part time and spend a lot of time keeping the house kept up and ready for said baby. Outside of that after 7 PM-ish I have lots of free time to play games, watch netflix etc. My wife works nights so I am free to do as I so wish until the baby comes and then...well....if I don't have time to game, I don't have time!

My wife and I set one night a week aside for us each to do our thing. My wife goes out with her best friend for dinner, I play PC games with my buddies. So one night a week is dedicated to gaming - usually around five hours. On other days, it depends on the housework, long term projects, and how work was that day. If everything is at a resting point, Ill play games for a bit.

This is not counting my cellphone gaming, which random and often. Though cellphone gaming is mostly pinball and boardgames.

My wife and I try to play a boardgame a week aswell (usually Saturday or Sunday night). Sometimes it is a couple rounds of short games - ie Sorry Sliders. Sometimes it is one long game - ie Panzer Leader.

I have a designated day every Thursday for playing multiplayer games on Steam with "the boys..." which means fastbilly1, noiseredux, and our buddy Xentrix.

Beyond that, I try to get in a few hours on the weekends and maybe an occasional hour on a weeknight. My girlfriend and I plan our dinners for the week each weekend, and we often trade off cooking, but then we like to watch movies while we eat, so I might get half an hour or so in which to do a lot of the gaming I spent all day thinking about at work.

Also, I need to get back to writing an hour a day...I'm kicking myself that I haven't gotten back into the groove of that yet.

Man, I feel really young based on the current results.

I'm 26. I manage to find enough time for gaming around my job, but it is a lot less than when I was at school, or university (I got a lot of gaming done when I was at Uni). I don't game every evening, but when I do it's normally for a good 2 or 3 hours. On weekends, I tend to play at least 3-5 hours a day if I'm in the house, but I don't let it stop me from going out with friends or my girlfriend for the day.

I still don't have some of the commitments a lto of you guys have to worry about - I'm not a dad or anything like that, I'm not saving up for my own house just yet, not planning on getting married right now - it'll all happen eventually I'm sure, but for now it's not too bad.

I'm close to 32. Stay-at-home father to a toddler.

Generally speaking, I only have time to play video games when she's sleeping. Though lately she has been asking to play with me - but I limit our co-op time to maybe 10 minutes a day. She is partial to the game "Namco", which is actually time spent playing Pac-Man and/or Dig Dug.

Once she goes to bed for the night I typically spend time with my wife or doing homework or engaging in some other hobby. If I do any gaming on a given day I will usually start around 10 PM. I can squeeze in about 60-90 minutes per day, though occasionally I may have a Saturday night binge of 2-3 hours.

I mostly play short(-ish) retro RPGs, platformers, 2nd gen games, and arcade games so I still manage to finish many games per year.
