It's been a while since I've played Rondo of Blood... How does it save? I know when you lose all your lives you can select to continue or save game. But does it auto save after beating a level? It's a pain in the ass if you wanna stop playing to have to purposely lose all your lives in order to save.
Xeogred wrote:For another potentially interesting discussion, which subweapon(s) do you guys like the most in the classic games?
It really depends on the game, and a lot of times which part of each game.

Castlevania 1, I get the axe to beat the first boss, then I pick up the holy water in level 2 with a plan to beat Dracula with it.

For the rest of the games though, it really depends. Each sub weapon has strengths and weaknesses. The axe is definitely great for a lot of bosses, especially those that can fly or are large with a hard to reach strike point. But for bosses that are on the same level as you, the dagger and boomerang are usually a lot better. And if you have a triple shot, you can never go wrong with the boomerang. It's basically like a item crash.

The holy water works so differently from game to game. In 1, 3, 4, etc, it just sits there on the ground and burns for a few seconds. In Rondo, SotN, etc, it's trails along the floor. Both are useful, just depends when you need them. And in CV1 it freezes anything it touches, including bosses, which gives it a clear advantage over anything else.

The axe is great in Bloodlines because of the way the item crash works. Normally, you can only throw the axe up and it comes down in an arc. The axe's item crash in Bloodlines though give it a straight horizontal shot like the dagger or boomerang.

SotN (not that I really use a subweapon much in it at all), I keep dagger from start to finish. The ridiculous speed they can be pumped out at just... I love it.

The booby trapped sewer system? It's not that bad, save for those flying eyeballs. What part of it is giving you the most trouble? Are you finding the secret health in the wall right before the collapsing bridge in the second portion?

I still need to get that game.

In other news I've tried Dracula X on PSP... and I stuck at it.

Way too much running into the spikes because I mistimed my jumps. At least the boss was easysauce so I one shotted him. Got to the boss of stage 9 a few times but always died when he was down to one life bar; I keep arriving with no sub-weapons because I miss most of the upper paths, I apparently always skip the axe, and the one time I found the secret area I got yanked back out when I jumped down to the lower portion and couldn't get any of those sub weapons.

I'll probably give it another try tonight if I get back from Magic with time left before bed.

The prison/dungeon stage? When I was young, I was stuck on the stage for the longest time. Even to this day, when I replay CV4, that's the only stage that gives me any trouble. That's usually where I get the password and take a break.

The SNES version of that stage has green slim and whatnot. The SFC version had red blood, with red guts (or whatever) stuck in some of the spikes. But IIRC, the SFC version also doesn't have as many checkpoints, it's a long while before the first checkpoint.

It's a pretty long way to the first checkpoint in the SNES version as well.

I think that was also the level that the enemies got extra health, which came as a surprise to me.

Yeah, when you fall into that level, it's like the game punches you in the face and tells you "Shit just got REAL!"

The level after it is the ghost level, right? With the bat boss at the end? I like that level, it has a lot of nice touches. The music is catchy, it gets stuck in your head easy (it's in mine right now). And it's an original track, too.

It's the haunted treasure room with the treasure bat, yeah. It's a cool level, but it's also where my cold runs usually get stopped. All of the precise jumps and swiftly crumbling platforms get me.
