Easily top 5 movies ever. That movie is so doggone good. Such a classic. The way I describe it is, "I like entertainment (movies, music, games, whatever) that does what it sets out to do", and I think BRIDE is a perfect example of that. It stays true to itself throughout.
That's Ebert's first rule to making a great movie, word for word. His second rule is "I ask myself, would I rather watch the cast in a movie, or have dinner with the cast of the movie? If I'd rather have dinner with the cast, the movie failed". Poignant and true.
When I think of the brilliance of THE PRINCESS BRIDE I think about how it's a Grandfather reading a story, which comes off as a Grandfather telling a story. Peter Falk is so much a part of the story, as the story itself.
And this is just my opinion. If someone says "I don't get it", fine by me. But for me the film is like THE GOONIES, STAR WARS, INDIANA JONES, and GONE WITH THE WIND, all mixed together and told by your Grandfather.
On a personal note, the movie takes me back. Reminds me of when I was sick and my Grandfather would drop by to check in on me. Kind of like when I watch The Price Is Right, it always reminds me of being home sick as a dog, be it in high school or college. The atmosphere is comforting. Not many films can take you to a "place" but the ones that do...they stick to you like glue.
Moving on... Not this, but next week gives us St. Patrick's Day. Always a HUGE deal at my home. PATRIOT GAMES is a must, but what other films of the Irish type should I place on the venue?
