Theres a pretty common issue with people buying used games from Gamefly where it will have little dings along the edges of the disc. The blu rays themselves are always completely scratch free but those little dings can often keep the disc from playing properly. Though I sometimes get discs that have dings in them, i've never had one not work for me.

Anyone know what causes these dings on their part? Are they using a resurfacing machine on them or something?

Speaking from experience I'm pretty sure that isn't wear from a resurfacing machine. As I said all you can do is some light buffing. If you using a light sanding pad for 5 seconds, or a buffing pad for a 1 minute+ you go right into the data layer :P. As opposed to a CD/DVD which can go 6+ cycles with a coarse sanding pad before you eat into it. The data layer is just insanely close to the surface.

That is why personally I like cd/dvds when it comes to used games. Usually an unreadable cd/dvd can be saved unless someone has really gone to town on it. Brays on the other hand can be abused to the point they are unreadable and yet still look brand new unless you look closely.

Most likely the damage to the edges is from someone being to rough putting it into the drive or case. That or just a disc defect.

Could be from the console being bumped while the disc is spinning inside it.

And you can bet your bottom dollar GameFly resurfaces their discs before they resell them.

Interesting, it is just specifically notorious for GF's used games. I've never purchased a game elsewhere and had those strange dings. Not sure what it is.

I have no idea either, just a shot in the dark thought.

I did find this:

Perhaps these nicks have to do with something the post office is doing to them as they ship around in paper envelopes? I agree with the user in that thread that said the nicks could lead to cracks that could shatter the discs inside a drive. Centrifugal forces being as they are.

That's pretty scary (moreso for possible system damage). I did get a cracked Simpsons movie Blu-Ray from Netflix a few years ago.
