Another vote for Monster Tale. It's original fun and exactly what I expect from a Nintendo handheld.
I also want to bring into consideration two Wayforward games, both comic book related:
Thor was a great arcade 2d hack slash brawler. I highly recommend this game.
Batman The Brave and the Bold. Like the Wii version it's easy but a solid game with tons of charm.
Lastly if we're lumping the DSi into the same category, which I don't see why not, Shante and the Pirates Curse was originally realised on DSiWare.

As long as a Phoenix Wright game makes the list, I'm happy. My preference is for the first one before the series got really weird and ghosts were being called to the stand.

I'm personally leaning toward "no" on anything that can't be physically purchased and played in 3-5-10 years.SpaceBooger wrote:Lastly if we're lumping the DSi into the same category, which I don't see why not, Shante and the Pirates Curse was originally realised on DSiWare.
Someone referencing this list in 10 years, will they be able to purchase and play Pirate's Curse on their DS? Unlikely, unless they are willing to use pirated software or other hacking, etc.

You're thinking of just IV. They didn't do that to any extreme like IV. But why would fan translations even count?turbolegs wrote:I would have to vote against the EU/US Dragon Quest games (IV-VI) based on the overuse of regional accents and dialects. The SNES fan translations remain superior.

And turbolegs has also discounted the awesome visual and audible upgrades and other additions made to the DS versions (such as manual control of all your party members in DQIV's final two chapters). I found the dialect inflections to be (mostly) charming personally.pepharytheworm wrote:Your thinking of just IV. They didn't do that to any extreme like IV. That makes sense. So my votes are Moster Tale and Thor.mjmjr25 wrote:I'm personally leaning toward "no" on anything that can't be physically purchased and played in 3-5-10 years.SpaceBooger wrote:Lastly if we're lumping the DSi into the same category, which I don't see why not, Shante and the Pirates Curse was originally realised on DSiWare.

I'll clarify: the best version of DQ5 is ultimately going to be the SNES fan translation or the PS2 fan translation.pepharytheworm wrote:You're thinking of just IV. The PS2 release of DQ5 adds the Symphonic Suite soundtrack, rotating camera, lush texture work etc. The DS version cannot compare. And though it does feature the terrible accents that plagued DQ4 to a lesser extent, the translation effort is still far and away from the original script (which for me is a deal breaker).
The definitive version of DQ6 is likely the SNES fan translation for the same reasons (localisation).

Noted. But again, DQ5 on the PS2 remains the definitive release for the reasons I posted above.Exhuminator wrote:And turbolegs has also discounted the awesome visual and audible upgrades and other additions made to the DS versions (such as manual control of all your party members in DQIV's final two chapters). DQ4 is available on the PS1 and whilst it is JP exclusive, at least it doesn't have the regional accents which I really feel harm the game and are an unnecessary (and borderline xenophobic) liberty taken by the translation team.
I know we are also talking about physical releases, but all DQ games have since been ported to iOS or are available on other platforms, rendering the DS versions fairly obsolete.
Yay for DQ9 though, that's a top ten.

Knights in the Nightmare is easily in my top 5 for NDS. Bullet hell SRPG. I'd kill for a proper sequel. Don't bother with the PSP version, Stylus control is where it's at.
