List: Best 30 NDS Games (What do you want on yr shelf)

Post by mjmjr25 »

Greetings; My Brothers,

Some of you have no DS games, some have less then 30, some more...some have hundreds.

If you had to limit your list to 30 - what would they be (and why).

Things to consider (but not dealbreakers...just considerations):
- Is there a better version on another handheld
- Have subsequent sequels left the DS version obsolete
- Have you played it recently and is it holding up?
- Please don't say Infinite Space because it's rare. Say Infinite Space because you've played it and it is in the 30 best DS games.

Argue for and against in efforts to get the best consensus we can..

1. Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story
2. Mario Kart DS
3. Advance Wars: Dual Strike
4. Professor Layton Unwound Future
5. NanoStray
6. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
7. Contra 4
8. Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
9. Kirby Canvas Curse
10. New Super Mario Bros.
11. Dragon Quest IX
12.
13.

Okay... I love the DS. It's an RPG powerhouse. Some initial picks.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies - The best game in the series. DS exclusive. Incredibly addictive and lengthy with some great multiplayer. Maybe the best original JRPG of the generation?

Final Fantasy III - Remake that blows away the Famicom original. Hard to go wrong with classic Final Fantasy. Only version of the game released in America (physically at least).

Intellivision Lives! - The touch screen controls emulate the original gamepad, which makes this vastly superior to the other versions. Contains the two D&D games, which are absent on most of the other compilations.

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes - Super addictive Western strategy/RPG/puzzle game with anime graphics. Was never popular, but did well in reviews across the board.

New Super Mario Bros. - The beginning of the "New" Mario series. Just plain fun Mario 2D action.

Radiant Historia - Another great exclusive JRPG with tons of well-written dialogue and excellent music/graphics. I could not put this one down.

Games I'd like to hear more discussion about / unsure whether they belong:
Chrono Trigger: Extra content is padding. I'd rather just play the original.
Final Fantasy IV: "Definitive" version seems to be the PSP one.
Etrian Odyssey series: can't pick just one game. 3DS titles are a bit better.
Metal Slug 7: XX on PSP is "definitive" version.
Contra 4: Can't beat it.
Zelda games: Some of the weakest in the franchise. Skip.

Golden Sun 3, not quite as epic as the first 2 but still a damn good game.

I keep hearing people rave about The World Ends with You and its on every top 10 DS games list but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet

I really loved Fire Emblem Dark Dragon, but alot of people find it to be one of the worst in the FE series. I also hear people say that the Japanese only FE New Mystery of the Emblem is much better and has been fully translated. I have yet to play that one though

I didn't like this one at all. Ugly art style, heavy reliance on imprecise touch screen controls, annoying difficulty. You're right though, "the reviewers" liked it so I may be in the minority.

I haven't played the third Golden Sun. Wasn't in love with the first game and never even finished part two.

I'm going to throw support behind some of my favorites early:

Nanostray (Nanostray 2 has more pizazz and I like them both, but prefer the first of the 2, its simplicity is an attribute)

Ivy the Kiwi (plays diff. than the wii version with use of stylus, a bit easier, but still very fun)

Professor Layton and the Curious Village (I don't want to nominate all 4 as they are all pretty similar and this was the first iirc)

Super Mario 64 DS (finally can play this game w/o getting dizzy)

Wario Master of Disguise (another fun Wario platforming romp - a lot of controls to learn early on, but once you get past it the game flows and is quite fun)

Yoshi Touch n Go (this is what the DS will always be about for me - quick, easy, brilliant use of the stylus, short competitive little bursts of gaming - can not recommend this game enough)

...more to come...

I'm sure the classic staples of DS gaming will be put. But someone else will post them.

But for me, I really enjoyed these series of games:

Advance Wars DS series- I have played and re-played all of these many times over!

Castlevania series- Dawn of Sorrow, Order Of Ecclesia, Portrait of Ruin. All three have their good and bad, but each one is good in for metroidvania gameplay.

Games I enjoyed playing

Puchi Puchi Virus
Trace Memory
Metroid Prime Pinball
Soul Bubbles
Rhythm Heaven
Planet Puzzle league
Monster Tale
Megaman Zero Collection (does this count? Even though its from GBA?)
Metal Slug 7
Aliens Infestation
2600 and jr,5200,nes/top loader, master system, intellivision, TG-16, genesis 1,2,3, SNES, snesJR, CDX, 3DOfz10, gamegear, gameboy and pocket, GBC, sega saturn, PSOne w/screen, Virtual Boy, N64, NGPC, Gameboy Advance sp, Dreamcast, Black Dreamcast, oXBOX, Playstation 2, PStwo, Gamecube, gameboy player, DS lite,DSi XL, PSP1000/3000,Wii,PS3 120gb,3DSXL, xbox 360, PSvita, PS4

You might have to extend it to the top 50 with size of the library. There's gonna be some heated Sonic Colors / Monkeyball action in this thread.

Not necessarily all top 30 stuff but I enjoyed Fire Emblem, Izuna 1-2, Metal Slug 7, Main series Pokemons (and the Dungeon stuff), Phoenix Wright series, Okamiden, and Little Red Riding Hood Zombie BBQ.

And yeah Bone, the Zeldas angered me severely. The stylus to move thing is awkward and strains my hand muscles because of the position it needs to sit. Shoulda been optional, but I was done with it so quickly that I never found out if you can change it or it needed the D-Pad for something else.

Seemed like Metroid Prime Hunters worked better with the stylus though (for me anyway). I can't remember if I just made it all D-Pad and XYBA or actually played through it with the stylus. Speaking of which... that would be a decent honorable mention.
