I am a HUGE fan of the DS. In my life I have bought brand new, 2 Onyx units, 1 Crimson Red, 1 Metallic Silver, 2 Cobalt & Blacks, a Bronze DSi XL, and who knows what else. This platform was and still is pure crack to me. That said I only have so much free gaming time to split amongst so many other platforms, so I have not yet played even half the DS games I'm interested in (yet). So in that regard, I am only going to post DS games I've actually played and truly enjoyed.

In no particular order...

Hotel Dusk <-God tier adventure game, amazing OST, fantastic dialogues, innovative puzzles, unique art style. It's pure bliss. The sequel Last Window is great too, but playing it without playing this first would be foolish.

Trace Memory <-Another amazing adventure game by CiNG with all the charm you could ever want.

Ghost Trick <-Some of the best animation you'll ever see and a soundtrack that rocks the house, crazy cool puzzle adventure with a wild story.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia <-Combines the "metroidvania" style design along with areas influenced by traditional games in the series. Great protagonist, tons of variety, and legitimately challenging bosses. The second best "metroidvania" game in the franchise right behind Symphony of the Night.

Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney <-Crazy humor, creative game design, and great music. A classic game that everyone should at least try once.

Mario Kart DS <-The best game in the series. Super tight controls, fair AI, and you've got to love the Mission Mode with the bosses.

Professor Layton & The Curious Village <-This is not the best game in the series, but it's where you should start. A surreal creepy yet childlike charm permeates the entire affair, while puzzles pop out at you from every angle of the evolving plot.

Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword <-The best and most accurate use of touch controls on the entire platform. Furious action, great graphics, and tough bosses makes this one feel like a console game squeezed into the tiny DS.

Dragon Quest IV <-Super fun remake of the NES game, with everything you remember from it polished to a gleaming sheen, with much of the tedium cut out. I had a lot more fun with this one overall than part V on the DS.

Mega Man ZX <-People rag on this because the map is hard to use, and they're right, it is. Everything else about the game though is fantastic. Essentially this is a Mega Man game done in the "metroidvania" format. If that sounds fun, don't miss this. Great OST too.

Soma Bringer <-I know this is a Japanese game, but an English fan patch is available. This game is Secret Of Mana meets Diablo, with a sci-fi flair thrown on top. Many people give up on this one too quickly, and admittedly the beginning of the game is slow. Stick with it, Soma Bringer gets better and better the longer you play it. Production values are through the roof because this was developed by Monolith Soft after all.

Brothers In Arms DS <-This game plays quite differently than the mainline series. It's much more third person action than third person tactics. Very fun stuff.

Kirby: Canvas Curse <-Kirby rolls and you have to draw where he goes. Starts off simple but gets hectic fast. Really cool art styles aplomb and highly unique gameplay.

Trauma Center: Under the Knife <-Awesome challenge brought forth by awesome original game design. Turbo scalpel slice like a pro.

Unsolved Crimes <-A hard boiled detective adventure with cool DS puzzles that no one has played other than me. I enjoyed it.

Rune Factory 3: A Fantasy Harvest Moon <-Irons out the annoyances of the first two games and has a much faster pace. Soooo much stuff to do you won't get bored. And howabout them waifus.

Front Mission DS <-Freaking amazing strategy game that is pure nerd porn for mech lovers. The DS version adds a whole new campaign that the SFC version didn't have. You're practically getting two games in one here. I LOVE THIS ONE

Orcs & Elves <-Super quick playing turn based dungeon crawler that is mega fun yet also requires tactical strategy to succeed.

So there's 18 at least. If I had played more of the immense library of the DS I'm sure I could come up with 30 no problem. Give me a few more years.

I would have to vote against the EU/US Dragon Quest games (IV-VI) based on the overuse of regional accents and dialects. The SNES fan translations remain superior.

I've added 10 to the list for now which have had multiple mentions, with another 15 or so which have had 1 or 2 positives, or 3-4 positives but also some negatives...

What are you doing with the "series, et al" designation? Can we go back and make the GCN list "Resident Evil 0 (series, et al)" or "Super Monkey Ball 2 (series, et al)"?

Also, you missed a bunch that had at least a couple of positives...

Mostly a place-holder for those. It is clear one of the games, perhaps more than 1 (if different enough) in these series are worthy of top 30. Taking Castlevania as an example, some have posted support for all, some have said one sucks (PoR?) and the other 2 are great, etc. I have no knowledge of them, so to me for now, it is clear at least one, maybe more will make the list, but more comments will be needed to make that determination.

I don't think so - in the case of RE there was a lot of debate about which of them if any should make the list and why. Only RE:0 came away from that conversation as being the most unique and a must have on the GCN (I know that is a simple breakdown of the conversations, but that was the end gist.)

You win the cute award for today.

I'll get 'em. Doing what I can in between work and whatnot, these threads have been taking 10 or so days to develop enough conversation so as to make sure we come up with a good list. It'll get there. This is also why I was hoping we would do just one at a time for a nice, methodical, and thoughtful process.

Portrait Of Ruin isn't the best because the latter half of the game is palette swapped recycled areas from the first half of it. For the handheld "metroidvania" series which rely on continuous fresh exploration, I found that deja vu aspect to be kinda lame. None of the other GBA or DS entries do this.

I agree. Order of Ecclesia is the best NDS Castlevania game. Likewise, Unwound Future is the best game in the Professor Layton series.

I also fully support including:

Contra 4 - It remains a NDS exclsuive, and it is arguably the best game in the Contra series.

Dragon Quest IX - It is also a NDS exclusive, and I consider it one of the best RPGs on any system. I poured over 125 hours into it, and I still come back to it from time-to-time.

Henry Hatsworth & The Puzzling Adventure - It is a tremendously fun game. It remains an NDS exlcusive, and it only really works on the NDS. (A WiiU port/remake/sequel would be awesome, however.)

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - Both are really fun, well-made games, and the touch screen controls are excellent.

Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword - It is an outstanding 3D action game that controls wonderfully. It is not as difficult as Ninja Gaiden (Xbox), but it is just as fast-paced and fun.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike - It is the best strategy game on the NDS, and I loved it.

I will try to write some more tonight, but as we are making this list, I think we shoudl be mindful not to include games that received superior, HD ports on Android and iOS devices (i.e., Ghost Trick, Puzzle Quest, Phoenix Wright) unless there is a compelling reason to pick the NDS version over its ports.

I agree with some of what you said, but I want to add...
prfsnl_gmr wrote:Contra 4 - It remains a NDS exclsuive, and it is arguably the best game in the Contra series.
Man do I disagree about "best game in the series" (that would be Contra III: The Alien Wars). It's a good game though, but it's almost comically difficult.
prfsnl_gmr wrote:The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - Both are really fun, well-made games, and the touch screen controls are excellent.
I beat both of these. Phantom Hourglass would have been "OK" except the Temple Of The Ocean King was annoying as hell. Likewise Spirit Tracks' train transportation system got old really fast, and became incredibly annoying by the end of it. Both games suffered from weak central gimmicks such as those, not to mention the forced all-touch-all-the-time controls, and rather aesthetically bland dungeons. Now I admit these games had charming graphics, nice music, and a good sense of humor. But they are like 7/10 kind of experiences, nowhere near the league we expect Zelda to be in.

The iOS port of Phoenix Wright is not superior, unless you don't mind having half the animation frames the sprites in the DS versions had. Ghost Trick should be listed because it's under represented on either platform.

That is a perfect reason to include the NDS versions. I am - obviously - a fan of the series, and I would love to see it represented on the list. (If we are going to choose just one, I vote for the original. It is the best stand-alone experience.)

Regarding iOS/Android ports, do they count if they aren't physical?
Great ways to play and enjoy the games, not so great to display on wire shelving units.
