Here is my idea of a general survival pack. Really my goal would be to keep lightweight, mobile, and quiet. You don't really need much of the stuff I have listed here it's just the things that would be nice to have. Plus there aren't any situations where you really need to plan for encountering hostiles if the world has gone that far to shit your going to need a lot more then a survival pack.

Well my pack list:
Multitool
Nuts(cheap, long shelf life, plenty of protein, plus I just like nuts)
Matches / Flint
Plastic Baggies(water proof storage)
Water / Canteen(ones with the tin cup protector are great in case you need to boil water/do some light cooking)
Toothbrush(toothpaste isn't really necessary)
Ammo + Mags(would probably pack a 500 count of .22 and maybe 25-50 3.57 rounds)
Universal gun cleaning kit( mines similar to this )
Water Purification Tablets(in case fire/boiling isn't an option)
Extra socks(extra warmth or you can use them as filters)
Gloves
Toboggan
Compass / Map
Hunting Knife(mainly for skinning/butchering)
Antibiotic Ointment
Aspirin
Bandages
Needle and Thread
Fishing Line (good for snares and general use)
Fishing Hooks + a few Sinkers(Fishing isn't really the best option if you want to be mobile and unnoticed but hell it's nice to have options. Plus it isn't much additional weight)
Small light weight tarp(shelter / dragging larger objects if need be)
Rubber Bands(light weight and they have a million and one uses  )
Basic battery operated radio with a few spare batteries(ear buds for noise reduction isn't a bad idea either)

My Guns:
1. GSG Kalashnikov: It's a .22lr so ammo is cheap, light weight, and abundant. It's quiet and very accurate great for small game hunting. I have two 24 round clips + one 15 round clip and while not automatic it can put a lot of lead down range fast. It looks like an AK47 so that is a deterrent in and of it's self. Plus its easy to disassemble and light weight.
2. Taurus 357 Magnum Revolver: Simple revolver with plenty of stopping power. It's a basic gun so there is less that can go wrong however reload is slow(especially since speed loaders don't work with my model) but then again you shouldn't be putting yourself in situations where you need more then 6 shots. Really it would be mainly a last resort for self defense especially since you can hear it from quite a distance. My gun also has the 6 inch barrel which helps with accuracy and recoil plus adds to the intimidation factor.

Really the only thing that I worry about it idiotic people I mean at this point everyone has lived through a prolonged power outage or water shortage and seen how stupid people can get. Imagine a wide scale disruption across the country.

We had a windstorm knock out power to a large portion of our area for about a week even with AEP pulling workers around the country. For the first 3 days you could not get gas, fast food, or bottled water because people freaked out filled up every gas tank they had, bought all the water they could find, and many businesses simply closed their doors till things settled down. To add even more problems to the mix trees were blocking many roads completely cutting some people off from the outside world. I was working with the DOH at the time and we spent a solid month just clearing the trees off the roads.

Only raisins and M&Ms for sustenance? If you would have just taken chocolate covered raisins you could have left room for some Twizzlers too!

I've dug myself a hole in the back yard. I put a wood plank over it with some AstroTurf on top. Inside I only have top shelf liquor and cuban cigars. I figure if I'm going to ride out the Apocalypse I might as well do it in style.

I do plan to add a giant pile of coke in there though, because when the shit hits the fan a giant pile of coke will keep you going for at least ten minutes. Oh! and guns and shit too. You need that shit.

If shit really gets bad, like "my house has burned down and the dollar is now worthless" bad, I like to think I know how to do enough things to be useful for people and kept myself fed. Making solar cookers and baking sourdough are useful skills I hope!

Maybe I could offer to be the librarian for the local warlord and he could let me make sure his side KNOWS STUFF. :P

If this happens -- I will likely try and get in touch with fast, head on down south, and help him build his geodesic greenhouse. I'd help him get started on some aquaponics and build us a sustainable organic garden.

I'd be a little Blu squatter. Feeding the billies and nannies, having little birds eat out of my hands, not given a hoot 'bout nuthin! Live out my days nice and peaceful like.

Alright, I'm gonna engage at face value, here.

America is much more vulnerable to natural disasters and non-violent attacks than violent attacks. However horrific the 9/11 attacks were, New York recovered much more rapidly than New Orleans did from hurricane Katrina. Where our infrastructure is weak, especially near fault lines and coastal areas, natural occurrences like earthquakes, hurricanes, and snow storms pose much greater risk of damage and extended lack of modern services.

Honestly, the only kind of terrorist attack that would really shut things down in the US would be a coordinated attack on utilities, especially the power grid (ancient technology without enough fail-safes and and too many insecure network-connected devices). While ISIS is media-savvy, they don't seem to have a large cyber warfare division, particularly owing to their lack of permanently held territory. There's a reason the most widespread and dangerous cyber attacks are usually attributed to nation states.

A survival kit could certainly be useful in the case of a natural disaster or serious power outage, but at the same time, the US learned quite a bit about dealing with disasters after the failed response to Katrina. I think a survival kit might not actually be much of a necessity given improvement in disaster response.
