I do agree with your sentiment about Sonic. Those games were definitely not all about speed and loop-de-loops, regardless of what players' memories of them were.
However, I do find it interesting that you're ragging on
Shovel Knight for being bland and derivative, yet don't feel that
Freedom Planet is bland and derivative, even though they both remix elements from disparate games.
Now, it might very well be that
Shovel Knight might not push the right buttons for you, but that also means
Freedom Planet might not push the right ones for us. Especially if Sonic wasn't really our jam in the first place. It could very well be that we can appreciate how
Shovel Knight remixed those elements and made its own twist on them just as you feel
Freedom Planet does for
Sonic/Gunstar/Mega Man.
So... I think
Shovel Knight is absolutely fantastic, and it's everything I could have possibly wanted. But if you didn't like it, it's coo'.
