Anime games that are good enough to be fun for non-fans too

Post by ZeroAX »

Saw that thread about an anime brawler that takes place in Sega inspired levels with a lot of anime characters I don't know, and I noticed I wasn't even interested enough to watch the trailer.

This got me thinking that while I have played/tried plenty of anime licensed games, I don't know how many I would bother with if I wasn't a fan of the franchise.

So I made this thread to discuss anime games that you think are good enough games for non-fans to enjoy too.

Lots of anime brawlers could be in this list, if it wasn't for the fact that well.....when you compare them to the kings of the genre like Street Fighter....they're not really good games. They mostly focus on the fan-service and not creating a complex or balanced game. Specially the balance thing gets thrown out of the window with 90% of the games I've tried.

That being said, one unbalanced but fun game I tried was Digimon Battle Arena on the PS1:

A Smash Bros clone, but this came out when its only competition was the original smash bros game, and not even on the same platform, so I really enjoyed playing this on my friend's playstation....but I do remember taking the metal wolf and owning my friend due to the character's screen filling straight line laser attack

And one entry that springs to mind, but I'm kind of biased in favor of is One Piece Unlimited World Red on the PS3, 3DS, Wii U and PS Vita

ok I will be honest, if you don't follow the anime you will be totally lost on the plot, but I find the light RPG-brawler combination to be really fun. All 9 characters play distinctively, the graphics are bright and colorful, and the game has a good length, with lots of extra content for completitonists /fans of hte series.

oh and a fun local co-op multiplayer mode, that's designed for handhelds so it is kind of stupid on the PS3

This is what split-screen looks like on the PS3:

....yeah.

I haven't tried teh Wii U version, but I hope one player can play on the gamepad and the other use the TV. on the handhelds you can play up to 4-player co-op, but I have no idea how that can be fun challenge wise, cause even with just 2 players, it's almost impossible to lose

EDIT

I now noticed that that screenshot is from the Wii U version, and still stupid split-screen :/

I'd say this game....

ranma 1/2 chougi ranbu hen

Image

its a game for the Super Famicom.

I'm lucky enough to own a copy. And yeah I'm a fan of the Anime and manga.

This game is way better than Hard battle that did come out in the US market.

Think of it as a slower Street Fighter II. But it works.

The game needs no translation (but is is out there  ) But its the standard quarter circle and full circle punch kick fighter.

I'm saying its easy to pick up if you know any type of fighting game.

Really? I played it for a bit and it didn't seem that fun. It greatly suffered from the tiny on screen play-area imo, and felt like the fan service was its only draw.

Strange. I'm not even a huge fan of Jump stuff aside from maybe 3 or 4 properties.

I personally prefer the Jump series greatly over Smash. Would still be playing it if I was still able to find people to play with.

Maybe I should mention that I only played the Japanese version in single player

Good recommendation me thinks. I think I'm gonna get the jp import version of that and see how playable it is.

Also this is a really good idea for thread OP. I hope it stays afloat, although I'm kinda drawing a blank here for ideas.

For when they came out, and I'm saying they're only good, not excellent, but on PS1 in that point of time both Vampire Hunter D and Speed Racer were solid games. One clearly a racer with some car combat mechanics, and the other was a third person resident evil looking type but fully normally controlled hack and slash game.

The Robotech game that hit the GC/PS2 a decade ago was a solid flight/mech combat game too even if you had no idea what that 80s property was all about.

Here's another one I played a lot back in the day. I am not aware of there being a part one to this? Maybe its just named weird.

Image

I was aware of the Cartoon (anime). I know it was a distant third behind pokemon and Digimon but this Trading card game really sucked me in for a while.

I Dont know if this card game was ever released physically in the USA. But the basics of the card game in videogame form is in there. Would it have been as popular as Pokemon? Who knows, but give it a little try and you may become hooked on it.

Image

There's some nice combos and some strategy involved. So even if you've never seen the anime, you'll get how the game is played.
