Based on the criteria of the original post...
More examples: Super Mario Strikers Charged was a mess (imo) and was a downgrade from the GCN version - it wouldn't make this list. Mario Kart Wii was very good, but w/Mario Kart 8 being such an improvement, MK Wii wouldn't make my list either. (this is not to say they can't be on the list; this is to say if they are on my shelf in 10 years, I don't think i'd pick them up and play them over these other versions, so they don't meet my personal criteria for game selections).
New Super Mario Bros. U is a far better game than New Super Mario Bros, and we're talking 10 years from now, what's going to be on my shelf? New Super Mario Bros. U! (and New Super Luigi Bros. U for modifying the formula and elevating the game once more). New Super Mario Bros. deserves an honourable mention for what it brought to the table, but in picking only 25, it's not reasonable to make the cut given other games that are better than it. It's certainly in the top 50. I don't know that it's a demonstrable fact that NSMB is better than Sonic Colours (them's strong words), but Sonic Colours is unique to the Wii (the DS version is a different game) and an excellent fun title somewhat unlike a lot of what the Wii has to offer. dsheinem professes to like Sonic 4 better, and Sonic 4 is fun...but available on pretty much any platform you want to play it on. I don't think its experience is superior to Colours, but then, Colours offers a mix between 2D and 3D that mixes it up and keeps it interesting.
I generally dislike most Sonic games, so it's bizarre that I'm advocating for one.
