Because I have EVERY game installed all at once. I don't want just the OS to gain the speed boost; I want my games to load faster too. It takes up about 1.5 TB on my HDD. Then I've got another HDD that's for media; videos, music, etc.

As an eventuality, that'd be nice. However, in the meantime, I think it's pretty illogical. It's making an all-or-nothing situation where there isn't one.

Why not enjoy SSD performance outside of games for the time being, and aim to eventually replace your game HDD(s) with them as costs come down?

It's a moving target too. I swapped my (full) 1.5TB game install drive out for a 3TB one a couple weeks ago, because I like to keep things installed too. Feels like a problem where the solution is always going to be juuust around the corner.

All I use this machine for is videos, internet, and games. I don't turn it off at night so the Windows boot performance isn't worth the massive hassle of getting a new system drive, getting all the shortcuts rejiggered, and all the rest, especially with the Hiberboot feature of Windows 8 that already makes boot much faster than in the past.

The SSD size has been increasing at a much faster rate than my storage utilization. So I can wait for the two lines to intersect.

Consider one of those hybrid drives that uses all sorts of caching and pre-caching algorithms. That way you get the cheaper magnetic storage and the advantage of a flash boost.

Also, while the seek rate is much better on SSDs, I think a traditional hard drive will continue to take the case for raw data rate.

While I think that still rung true a few years ago, at least at the top end of HDD performance (15k RPM drives and the like), modern SSDs are significantly faster. A WD Velociraptor can push around 200MB/sec sequential reads, where modern SATA connected SSDs can do around 500MB/sec, and that has more to do with the limitations of SATA than anything else. PCIe SSDs peak a lot higher.

Awesome! I seemed to remember that physical HDs had better sustained read rates at the high end even just a couple or 3 years ago, but I was so priced out of the SSD market at the time I stopped paying as much attention. I'm really glad SSDs have improved their performance so much while bringing the prices down, because now I can consider adding one when I finally get around to building a new rig.

Yup, that's basically how I think about it. I've got a 2TB HDD and that ones already about 75-80% full, so I'll be looking into getting another drive soon. I plan on getting another 2 or 3 TB one, because the space is more important than the speed for me when the price of getting that speed is so high.
