I was talking about online updates, not installing games from the disc. Also, the guys are reporting similar issues with PS4 which I do not think is a 2x BD disc like the PS3?
The PS4 (and Xbox One) have 6X drives, yeah, but they're still significantly slower than pulling data from the hard drive. Both consoles have mandatory installs as a result. Even 27MB/sec starts getting slow when you're pulling gigabytes of data into memory.

I don't have an Xbox One to compare to my PS4 for updates though. My point about the 360 is that developers couldn't necessarily rely on having the space for a big patch, as a HDD isn't actually standard equipment for a 360 (even now, you can go buy a 4GB flash memory model).

PS3 uses a 2x BDROM drive capable of sustained read at 9MB/s (that's MegaBytes not megabits). In order to download at that speed you'd need a 75~mbit/s line. The highest domestic broadband is 150mb/s and that was launched beginning of this year and is available in very limited areas. For a large portion of the PS3s life you were lucky to have 50mb/s lines in the UK and from what I've heard the US is even worse. Also you have to factor in the infrastructure capable of sustaining millions of PS3 units downloading at 9MB/s. Judging on the shitshow of their data transfer speeds for updates I think that's a HUGE stretch.

Good guess, but no dice.

The answer is programmer laziness. What is their incentive to do the more bandwidth efficient option if it's technically harder (though not by much)? You already paid them for the game by the time patches are coming out.

I was talking about why you have to install the entire physical Blu Ray disk to your PS4 HD just to play it, I wasn't referring to digital downloads

@ninjainspandex

Ah sorry there's two threads going here I thought you were replying to my open question.

@MrPopo

I don't think it's a programmer issue. I think this sort of feature should be built into the framework of the console. The operating system should be able to handle this type of thing natively and not rely on a programmers competency to patch a game. If that was the case every game would patch differently. We know that they don't.

it has a physical release......... in Japan only of course , but has a full english option if you wish to import but they are selling for $60 and that is a bit steep for my blood for a remake of a remake. I'll stick to my Saturn version.

Thanks for the tip. Just imported it! Shame it's only being released physically on PS3 though and not PS4.

Yeah, that's about how much I paid too. Apparently it's dispatched already, so hopefully I get it soon.
