I didn't begin "collecting" video games until 2010 or so. I missed the boat on cheap NES stuff.
 You and me both. That's right around the time I started with the retro stuff. I remember for about the first 6 months or so, I was able to find NES games for less than $5 at the flea market and thrift stores. Ahhh, the memories. It wasn't too long after that when...well, we all know what's been happening.

Strange. I'm becoming nostalgic for the "good ol' days" of my retro game hobby; a hobby that I initially started up for nostalgic reasons. :? Woah!

I've done that over a year now because the prices pissed me off.

That price on Metal Storm reminds me why I still own it. If it were a $10-20 game I'd ditch it as I only am into it now and again but for that price I'm not letting it go just in case which I do with some NES/SNES games I have now. I backed off SNES all that time too, but grabbed up 3 games in the last month because I got very good prices on them only.

The nice thing is with NES gaming and SNES, no matter how many price gouging trolls there are out there that flock to this game or that game beyond the known trendy, there's still a lot of solid games well under the radar that get little to no respect in the price wars. The games I got on good deals were Arcana, Wolf3D, and Arkanoid and they're all excellent.

I don't have hard numbers of any kind to support what I'm about to say, but I'm of the opinion that a notable portion of pricing on games these days simply cannot be justified with real evidence. In other words why is crappy game X on a particular console worth $10 while another is worth $2? They're both equally hard to track down I assure you.

That's just an easy example. There are plenty of games with no ties to a license and no proof of a short production run that are far more expensive than another game just like it, regardless of quality.

Anyways: I've acquired probably 20-30 NES games this year since the system is fairly new to me. I'm up to 96 unique titles I think. Only 700 to go!

Arcana is fantastic, I agree. One of the few first-person RPGs I've played through.

I just keep my eyes peeled for good games, they still float through my area from time to time. Mississippi isn't exactly a video gaming emporium, but I've done pretty well over the years. College towns probably help that a little bit.

NES prices are pretty fair in the local stores & flea markets here. Lots of good stuff for under $10.

I don't have many games but I am trying to get the staples or the must haves. The ones I need are
Mega man 3
Super C
Castlevania 1 and 3
Tecmo bowl
Bubble bobble
Tmnt
Kung fun
Russian attack
And I want one RPG to start with. Not sure to either go star tropics or dragon warrior.
Would love to own all the mega man's but I would probably get thrown out off the house spending that kind of money lol. Besides I love mega man 2 and 3. I think they were the best

Not familiar with that one do you mean Kung fu? Btw don't play the NES Dragon Warrior, play the SNES or GBC remake, its much more refined.

There's tons of enemies that don't fire at you -- 500 pts each and special POW icons that will turn them into fruits for even more points

I can find lots of common and uncommon stuff by digging around, but granted you won't find the high and "rare" like Metal Storm ($100 seriously?!), but still deals to be found. It pays to have knowledge of current prices, of course.
