Don't feel like finding the thread, but are you gonna show the movies to him in that suggested order? Episode 4, 5, 1 (possibly skip 1), 2, 3, 6.
It has crossed my mind...

Speaking of I really need to rehook up my vhs player and go through the original trilogy....I've owned it for a few months since I found it at a good will but haven't bothered to pop it in  and yet I have the oddest itch to see the newest one :|

^ You know you can get the original theatrical versions on DVD from NetFlix? They're only Laserdisc transfers, so they're letterboxed, but surely that's better than used VHS tapes from a thrift store.

There's some fanmade HD restorations floating around too, though that can be a pain to get ahold of. Having seen them I can say they're pretty nice though.

Still holding out for a proper official restoration to happen, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Yeah but I kinda don't like the idea of shelling out for netflix dvd and having to wait for the dvds to arrive(would be nice if they had something like redbox for that end...)

I say always watch 4, 5, 6, then 1, 2, 3, and not the "recommended list".

Also a fan of the laser disc transfers, which I've owned for well over a decade. Good stuff as I don't mind the imperfections of the special effects.

And of course the 'net is going nuts over the new lightsaber. Who cares if it "doesn't make sense"? Lightsabers have never made sense.

Looking forward to more teasers and trailers.

+1

Honestly the new effects in the 'special edition' versions are often really shoddy looking anyways and kinda poorly integrated into the film. The old effects may have had rough edges, but at least it was aesthetically consistent and it certainly had a special charm to it.

The effects get better with each new release. I got the Blu Ray set some months back. If you compare some of the effects to way back when the first Special Edition VHS set came out, the difference is super clear. Jabba looks a lot better, they cleaned up Han shooting Greeto (even though I wish they'd just restore it to the original version!), and a million small changes that come with every new Star Wars release. George just can't leave well enough alone.

[rant]In the BD release, at the end of Jedi when Vader is contemplating saving Luke, they made Vador say "No" a bunch of times before picking the emperor up and throwing him over. Possibly so a younger audience would understand that he's making a hard choice (because obviously his actions wouldn't speak loud enough) or to tie in the "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" at the end of Episode 3? [/rant]

Yeah, I'd like to get a hold of those fan made releases at some point.

Poke around online for a torrent of the "Despecialized edition HD," or something like that.

should be an AVCHD iso, just burn it to a dual layer DVD and pop it into just about any blu ray player. (I know I used the PS3 for it when I watched them.)

It really is pretty amazingly well done for a fan project. They even did things like find high resolution images of the original matte paintings and stuff. It's not perfect (limited resources and all) but they manage to reconstruct the original films pretty faithfully I think.

This alone negates the BD's for me. That's probably one of my favorite moments in the entire thing, and that version ruins it completely.
