You were playing with a DK1. Did you have razer hydras? If not, you were just playing Half Life with head tracking. Our mod works with DK2 and provides positional tracking of 5 body parts using the wireless Sixense STEM system or PrioVR. We also offer Virtuix Omni support to let one walk through the world of Half Life 2, and provide full decoupling of all limbs.

See:

VR is not a feature on a box to be ticked. Making a compelling VR experience requires much reworking, you essentially need to either design the game from the start to work with VR, or heavily modify it otherwords. Our mod is very comprehensive and we have made significant alterations to the original code.

Also, one generally has to get their VR legs, it's not going to feel right your first time in. You kind of have to get used to how VR works. Half Life 2 VR is a game that is pretty demanding of someone in VR, it's a lot to ask someone to jump right in to.

EDIT:
This is a good video and sort of explains what we're doing with our mod. We're going with as much hardware as possible at this point in time, essentially a full VR experience using every possible technology in tandem. Our HL2VR experience is pretty damn expensive to put together, but when it's assembled it basically is what this guy is talking about, to the extreme. Head tracked, hands tracked, torso tracked, chest tracked, both feet tracked, all completely decoupled.

They should release a mid-range consumer kit eventually. I'm fairly certain the majority aren't interested in splurging extra for the occasional VR session, and something has to be done about those cables.

No it does not. the oculus rift, DK2 sucks balls. Even at 70 fps it still lags and looks terrible. Biggest disappointment in video game history.

That's a pretty bold claim. Bigger than every other VR attempt up until now? Bigger than Duke Nukem: Forever? Bigger than when Sega left the console market? Bigger than Daikatana? Bigger than the Wiimote or Gamepad? I'm not saying your opinion is "wrong", but I'm thinking you're blowing this out of proportion.

I LOVE my virtual boy. I really do. So possibly my expectations are out of this world for virtual reality in the year 2014, but this contraption is a turd sandwich. It is by far the most disappointing video game experience I have ever had, and it's expensive to boot. To me, it is beyond terrible.

I could be wrong (I often am) but MYST was released almost twenty years ago, I think. I probably am wrong as I first played MYST in 1996 and it is 2014 if you are keeping score. MYST was, and is a captivating piece of immersion (I hate that word as much as you do) that took "everyone", "somewhere". The rift does none of that. However, it does make some people vomit.

To the point: The graphics for the rift are psone-ish. There is no "experience", rather shoddy controls and awful graphics no matter what lenses and settings you use.

I do love me some lisaloving, but I am not blowing this out of proportion. I do love gaming fads, from the Sega CD to the DS. But I do think the rift is the biggest pile of shit the gaming community has ever seen.

Can someone use a Oculus Rift if they wear glasses?

Because I do.

Same reason I don't watch 3D movies.

Yup. You have to pony up for different lenses though.

I get ill using my 3DS in 3D mode as well as watching 3D movies at the cinema. I honestly can't imagine this being different.
