Geometry error on Sony Trinitron WEGA KV-29SE10E

Post by Nick_Arrow »

Hi everyone!

For a couple of weeks ago I got me a Sony Trinitron WEGA KV-29SE10E.
Before that I had a Bang & Olufsen Beovision MX 7000. The reason I wanted
another CRT was that I needed to change the geometry of the TV and that
wasn't possible on the MX 7000 because I had the model 2.0 and the service
mode isn't available. :( Too bad, because I really loved the MX 7000.
I still have it left but I'm far away from being a technican and have no idea how
to build a jumper mod.

Anyway, the Sony Trinitron, had a lof of weird geometry settings that would
top down scrolling games looks like shit! When it scrolls the picture is extremely
wavy and it's almost like if there are distorsion on the sides of the screen..

I have looked in the online manual and for "default" settings but the screen is still
wavy and makes the game unplayable.. This is very weird!

This is the settings from the manual:

HPOS (Horizontal Shift) 31
HPAR (Horizontal Parallelogram) 31
HBOW (Horizontal Bow) 31
VLIN (Vertical Linearity) 31
VSCR (Vertical Scroll) 31
HSIZ (EW Width) 31
EWPW (EW Parabola/Width) 31
UCOP (EW Upper Corner Parabola) 17
LCOP (EW Lower Corner Parabola) 17
EWTZ (EW Trapezium) 31
VSLP (Vertical Slope) 31
VSIZ (Vertical Amplitude) 15
SCOR (S-correction) 14
VPOS (Vertical Shift) 31

If you want to see some pictures I can attach that!
This is how the picture looks when I adjusted a bit.
It looks OK as far as the picture is still but as soon
the game scrolls (vertically or horizontally) it looks
awful and wavy:

One more thing, I live in Sweden but have mostly all of my retro consoles
in NTSC. I think it's much better in NTSC than PAL.

I really need help with this because if I'm not getting this TV to work
I have to throw it away and look for yet another TV.

I appreciate all kind of help!

Thank you very much!

Best regards,
Niklas

It's difficult to get older model CRTs to display proper geometry, but the biggest problems are usually in the corners or in the consistent vertically scrolling. In most cases the waviness can be reduced or eliminated through consecutive adjustment of the "V" menu. Unfortunately, it appears that your model does not have fine-tuning of the screen through the VPNT menu. You can still get a lot of adjustments through your geometry menu once you straighten out the verts and try different geometry settings.

edit: woah a picture!

From the picture, I can see that your biggest problems are in your UCOP and LCOP also
VLIN setting is a little high (move it down to middle).
You should try to display a grid. I can provide a DVD tomorrow which displays one. If you adjust those settings you will be able to fix almost all of this problem.

Here's a picture of someone who has the exact same problem but in reverse.
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/64-direct ... ouble.html (ignore the responses and confusion there, but just so you know - you can get a happy medium and have everything look normal using those service manual V menu adjustments).

Disreguard the long PM about your screen.

I'll send you a grid picture tomorrow. You can burn it to a disc, and eliminate the curves interactively using the service menu. I'll post instructions.
Cheers!

Hi Anapan!

Thanks for your post!

What exactly does the "V" menu means? Is it the service menu?

I tried to adjust UCOP and LCOP including the VLIN setting but the
vertically scrolling (the wavy one) is still there.
It seems like that rolling not can't be reduced.
I think that the waving/distorsion could be removed somehow
otherwise this is a very very bad TV. You doesn't see those waves
when the screen goes horizontally, just vertically but none of the
geometry settings seems to reduce just that part.

Looking forward for the grid picture, hope that thing helps!

Shouldn't that work it out, I have to find another CRT.
Anyone here who wants to sell a good one to Sweden? ;)

Thanks!
