Tell me about it. It's cheaper to buy a different copy of Sonic 3 than replace the memory on the cartridge....and I don't even like Sonic 3 that much so I haven't bothered doing eitherZiggy587 wrote:SRAM with batteries is one thing. Non-volatile RAM is even more expensive. Even till this day, when memory is dirt cheap, NVRAM is still like 2-5 times the cost of its SRAM equivalent. And RAMTRON (used in the Sonic 3 cart) is an expensive brand.MrPopo wrote:It's entirely a cost thing. Having saves requires a battery and another chip to store the save. You ended up seeing saves for games that require too much data to represent in a password; RPGs and the like.
Sonic 3 saves work, but Sonic 3 & Knuckles doesn't

Depends how much a loose copy of Sonic 3 goes for. You don't have to replace it with the same exact one (which is actually impossible since RAMTRON doesn't make it anymore - although they make something compatible but it's kinda expensive IIRC). I'm sure a compatible NVRAM could be found. I've seen NVRAM chips below $10. Even if a Sonic 3 cart costs a few bucks less, you'd be better off since you'd have a brand new NVRAM with 0 reads/writes versus a used Sonic 3 cart with a used RAMTRON chip.ZeroAX wrote:It's cheaper to buy a different copy of Sonic 3 than replace the memory on the cartridge
Also, I say that any who has the ability to make such repairs SHOULD make such repairs. Sooner or later the RAMTRON chip will go bad in every single Sonic 3 cart (as well as all the SRAM, flash RAM, etc in every game cart). Instead of just saying fuck it and getting another used Sonic 3 cart, replace the RAM in the one you got. Compatible parts are easy to get right now and cheap enough. Will the same be true in 30 years when all the Sonic 3 carts wont save? Compatible replacement parts, such as the NVRAM needed, might not be available for such old tech by then.

This is notably easier with Sonic alone than with Sonic and Tails together. Tails always jumps a second after sonic. That messes up the jump mechanism in the barrels. This is why it's better to not have tails along for the ride.flojocabron wrote:watch out for Carnival Night Zone. There's some annoying gameplay at work in that level. I still hate to this day those spinning barrels.
I couldn't figure out how to get past them. I reset in anger too many times when I got stuck in the same spot.
Now you simply have to press up and down repeatedly to get the barrel to move and you time it right and jump off.
Stupid design.

you bet. As I grew older I felt I've became more analytic. I pay more attention to what's going on screen and make more informed decisions. Also, I enjoy the experience in a different way and don't pressure or hurry myself into finish a game (ie, it's just a game).raygank wrote:Isn't it interesting to come back to something that was once really hard for you and find it much easier?
