Compile.
Super Aleste is their only playable game. MUSHA is the single most overrated shmup I have ever experienced. At least Ikaruga is interesting after all the hype, MUSHA is just a dog. Good music does not make a good game.
Other than that its a solid list, but Compile being on there, and atop, really shames it. Toaplan deserves better, and Taito especially.
There aren't enough ">" to show how far ahead of the game Cave is tho

Re: Whats the Most Overrated Game?
Its a combination of forgivable flaws that, together, make their games fall short of arcade glory.TSTR wrote:Why everybody hate Compile? I love Compile.
1. Too easy. (Yeah, I'm that dick). Deathsmiles is easy, but its not poorly paced, and it has interesting mechanics to push, that create challenge.
2. Poor pacing. Their stages are just so damn long, and barely anything happens, maybe one set piece in 10 minutes. Gradius V has poor pacing, but its challenging, so while it would not be a top tier game for me, its still playable, I make progress and learn the layout of the game a little more each time I play, and the way you move through the stages is memorable.
3. No interesting mechanics. Sure, Fire Shark and Raiden can get away with this, but that's because they have great pacing and are challenging.
For me, when all 3 of those problems pop up, I find it hard to come back to their games. I wasn't cringing when playing them, but when you 1cc your first credit of almost their entire library, and then sit down and say "What shmup do I play?", I've never found myself in the spot that thinks "I'll play MUSHA again", because.... why? I know I'll clear, I know I could have played through 2 Cave games in the time it takes to clear, and I know there is no interesting way to push the game further to enjoy it. Instead, I just have a bunch of letters floating around the screen (Fuck I hate their powerups), 12 lives, 50 options, and a bunch of bosses that don't even seem like they want to kill me.
Their presentation is wonderful, I can't deny that. Cool sprites and settings, and some wonderful tunes. But, its not so wonderful that I'll play them just because of this, especially when many games in the genre have wonderful art and music.
Bad? No. Worse than the buffet of excellent shmups that I've barely scratched the surface of? Most definitely.
its like... paying a dominatrix to just go to town on you, fucking rip you two new ones, and she gets there, sits down, and reads you a story. And, the story sucks.

All valid points Sir Dun. I just like the firepower in those games. Make lots of things go BOOM.

The world needs more "easy" shmups and "short" RPGs.dunpeal2064 wrote: 1. Too easy
I actually do like Cave quite a bit - but I generally prefer retro games (of any genre) to modern games. Though to be fair I haven't played the earliest Cave titles, like DonPachi for instance.

I absolutely endorse short RPGs. Would kill for some more of those.
I'm cool with easy shmups, I just like em to have something in there for us try-hards, you know? Like, Futari, Deathsmiles, Dodonpachi Resurrection. Those games are all totally do-able, but at the same time are built with such a variety of difficulties, depending on what you are trying to do. You practically get to choose your difficulty. That would be ideal for me, then everyone wins!

You like firepower? Check out Batsugun. The amount of bullets your ship throws out when powered up is ridiculous.TSTR wrote:All valid points Sir Dun. I just like the firepower in those games. Make lots of things go BOOM.
